Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 hits the FCC with LTE you probably can't use

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 80 hits the FCC with LTE you probably can't use

The FCC can be cruel sometimes, showing us devices we're unlikely to see in the US without significant changes; this is one of those moments, unfortunately. A Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 has once again surfaced at the FCC, this time as the SM-T315 with built-in cellular access. However, it's not optimized for American use -- while there's AT&T-friendly HSPA data, the LTE inside is only meant for a handful of other countries, like South Korea. As such, this model won't be coming stateside unless there's a frequency change. We're not totally surprised at the lack of US-ready LTE when AT&T already offers the Galaxy Note 8.0, but it would be nice to have a little more variety in our 8-inch LTE slates.

Seesaw Science: The Hammer-Ruler Trick

Well balanced?: This tricky balancing act might look improbable, but with a little help from physics you will learn how it works. Image: George Retseck

Introduction
Ever wonder how balancing toys work? Simple toys that entertain by precariously balancing were popular in the Victorian era. These seemingly gravity-defying curiosities can rock back and forth at the edge of a table but remain relatively stable.

But how do they balance? The secret lies in a heavy but visually nondescript counterweight attached to the toy. Our eyes are drawn more immediately to the large, ornamental part of the toy that depicts a person or animal rocking back and forth on a tiny pivot point. On its own, this part of the toy looks unstable, which is precisely why such toys continue to be so intriguing?they make little intuitive sense; to an onlooker, it appears that the larger element should send the entire contraption off-balance.

For this fun experiment, you won't have to go searching for any century-old antique toys. All you'll need is a hammer, a ruler and a thick rubber band.

Background
An object's center of mass is a unique point where that object's mass is centered. For simple, symmetrical objects with equally distributed mass (such as a ruler), the center of mass lies in the object's geometric center (which would be just at the six-inch mark for a one-foot ruler).

For more irregularly shaped objects?such as a person on a bicycle?you might be more familiar with the term "center of gravity," which refers to a point on an object that's identified by averaging together all the gravitational forces acting on that object. Don't let this confuse you! For our purposes, it's fine to think of these two concepts as the same because Earth's gravity produces a relatively uniform downward pull on small objects near its surface. Think of it this way: If there's more mass in one region of an object than another (say, a person on top of a bike rather than the bike's wheels), then gravity applies more force to that region.

Let's apply this concept to two children sitting on opposite ends of a seesaw. They create a simple mechanical system consisting of a lever (the seesaw's plank), a fulcrum (the point about which the plank can tilt) and a couple of weights (the children). If the two children weigh the same, the system's center of mass is located in center of the seesaw's plank and directly above the fulcrum. Put a heavier child on one end of the seesaw, and you've shifted the system's center of mass away from the fulcrum. The greater torque (or force) that gravity applies to the more massive (and thus heavier) side of the system pulls the larger child to the ground while lifting the smaller child into the air.

Materials
? Hammer
? 12-inch ruler (plastic works, but wood is preferable)
? Thick rubber band
? String (optional)
? Tape (optional)

Procedure
? First, pick up your ruler and balance it lying lengthwise on your index finger. Try using the six-inch mark on your ruler as your balancing point?this is roughly the location of the ruler's center of mass, and you'll notice it's at the middle of the ruler. This is because our ruler is an object of uniform density and is shaped in such a way that it doesn't have a heavier or lighter end.
? Take your ruler and lay it flat on a table or desk. How many inches on the ruler can you nudge over the edge of the table before it falls off? Think about our hypothetical seesaw from earlier. You should find that once you nudge the ruler's center of mass over the table's edge (the fulcrum), gravity applies more torque to the more massive side of the system than the other, dragging it over the edge and onto the floor.
? Now, try to identify the center of mass on your hammer. If you hold your hammer lengthwise, can you balance it by placing your index finger beneath the point of the hammer located halfway along its length? Probably not! In fact, you should find that the hammer's head is much heavier than its handle. We can infer that the hammer's center of mass is located somewhere closer to its head.
? The goal now is to use our materials to build a new mechanical system with a center of mass located as close to the 0-inch tip of the ruler as possible. (Hint: our hammer will act as a counterweight.) Take another look at how classic Victorian balance toys are structured. Knowing what you've learned about where the hammer's center of mass is, where do you think the hammer is going to go when we build our new system?
? Loop your rubber band over your hammer so that it hangs somewhere near the middle. (Depending on how smooth the hammer handle is, you may want to affix the rubber band to the handle with tape. If your rubber band is too stretchy, you can use a loop of string approximately three inches in diameter instead).
? Loop the rubber band over your ruler. This end of the loop should hang near the 2-inch mark on the ruler. The end of the hammer's handle should intersect and form an acute angle with the ruler at around the 8-inch mark.
? Place the end of the ruler that starts with zero near the edge of the table. Does it balance? Try altering the position of the hammer's head relative to the tip of the ruler. With some careful adjustments, you can tweak the system so that its center of mass is located at the very tip of the ruler.
? Once you've gotten your system to balance, try nudging the 0-inch end of the ruler closer and closer to edge of the table. By doing so, you're moving the system's center of mass progressively closer to the fulcrum and, if you're careful, you can produce a dramatic effect by getting your system to balance on a mere sliver of the table's edge.
? Extra: If you want to create an even cooler visual effect and make your system look more like a Victorian balance toy, place a very light stuffed animal on the 12-inch end of the ruler. (A stuffed monkey that hangs onto the end of the ruler with clasped Velcro hands is a crowd favorite.)

Filibuster and protest stop Texas abortion bill

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Hundreds of jeering protesters helped stop Texas lawmakers from passing one of the toughest abortion measures in the country, shouting down Senate Republicans and forcing them to miss a midnight deadline to pass the bill.

Initially, Republicans insisted they had started voting before the midnight deadline and passed the bill that Democrats spent much of Tuesday filibustering. But after official computer records and printouts of the voting record showed the vote took place on Wednesday, and then were changed to read Tuesday, senators convened for a private meeting.

An hour later, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst was still insisting the 19-10 vote was in time, but said, "with all the ruckus and noise going on, I couldn't sign the bill."

He denounced the more than 400 protesters who staged what they called "a people's filibuster" from 11:45 p.m. to well past midnight. He denied mishandling the debate.

"I didn't lose control (of the chamber). We had an unruly mob," Dewhurst said. He then hinted that Gov. Rick Perry may immediately call another special session, adding: "It's over. It's been fun. But see you soon."

Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, spent most of the day staging an old-fashioned filibuster, attracting wide support, including a mention from President Barack Obama's campaign Twitter account. Her Twitter following went from 1,200 in the morning to more than 20,000 by Tuesday night.

"My back hurts. I don't have a lot of words left," Davis said when it was over and she was showered with cheers by activist who stayed at the Capitol to see her. "It shows the determination and spirit of Texas women."

Davis' mission, however, was cut short.

Rules stipulated she remain standing, not lean on her desk or take any breaks ? even for meals or to use the bathroom. But she also was required to stay on topic, and Republicans pointed out a mistake and later protested again when another lawmaker helped her with a back brace.

Republican Sen. Donna Campbell called the third point of order because of Davis' remarks about a previous law concerning sonograms. Under the rules, lawmakers can vote to end a filibuster after three sustained points of order.

After much back and forth, the GOP voted to end the filibuster minutes before midnight, sparking the raucous response from protesters. As the demonstrators thundered, Campbell urged Senate security to "Get them out! Time is running out. I want them out of here!"

If signed into law, the measures would close almost every abortion clinic in Texas, a state 773 miles wide and 790 miles long with 26 million people. A woman living along the Mexico border or in West Texas would have to drive hundreds of miles to obtain an abortion if the law passes. The law's provision that abortions be performed at surgical centers means only five of Texas' 42 abortion clinics are currently designated to remain in operation.

In her opening remarks, Davis said she was "rising on the floor today to humbly give voice to thousands of Texans" and called Republican efforts to pass the bill a "raw abuse of power."

Democrats chose Davis, of Fort Worth, to lead the effort because of her background as a woman who had her first child as a teenager and went on to graduate from Harvard Law School.

In the hallway outside the Senate chamber, hundreds of women stood in line, waiting for someone to relinquish a gallery seat. Women's rights supporters wore orange T-shirts to show their support for Davis.

The filibuster took down other measures as well. A proposal to fund major transportation projects as well as a bill to have Texas more closely conform with a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision banning mandatory sentences of life in prison without parole for offenders younger than 18 did not get votes. Current state law only allows a life sentence without parole for 17-year-olds convicted of capital murder.

The bill would ban abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy and force many clinics that perform the procedure to upgrade their facilities and be classified as ambulatory surgical centers. Also, doctors would be required to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles ? a tall order in rural communities.

"If this passes, abortion would be virtually banned in the state of Texas, and many women could be forced to resort to dangerous and unsafe measures," said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund and daughter of the late former Texas governor Ann Richards.

McCain slams Putin on Snowden: Russia?s actions ?reminiscent? of Cold War

Edward Snowden (Guardian)

Sen. John McCain weighed in on the Edward Snowden saga on Tuesday, saying that Russia's actions in the wake of the accused National Security Agency leaker's reported arrival in Moscow harkens back to the Cold War.

"It's reminiscent of the days of the Cold War, when you hear a Russian spokesman saying that [Snowden?s] not in Russia when every shred of evidence indicates that he is,? McCain said on CNN. ?We've got to start dealing with Vladimir Putin in a realistic fashion for what he is. He?s an old KGB colonel apparatchik that dreams of the days of the Russian empire, and he continues to stick his thumb in our eye in a broad variety of ways. Most importantly to me, of course, and should be to the world, is their continued support of [Syrian President] Bashar al Assad and the massacre taking place in Syria."

McCain's comments echoed what fellow U.S. lawmakers said about Putin on Sunday.

"Putin always seems almost eager to stick a finger in the eye of the United States?whether it is Syria, Iran and now of course with Snowden," New York Sen. Charles Schumer said on CNN's "State of the Union." "Allies are supposed to treat each other in decent ways."

"The freedom trail is not exactly China-Russia-Cuba-Venezuela," South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham said on "Fox News Sunday." "So I hope we?ll chase [Snowden] to the ends of the Earth, bring him to justice and let the Russians know there?ll be consequences if they harbor this guy.?

At a news conference in Finland on Tuesday, Putin said Snowden was still in the transit area of Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport, and that Russia would not hand him over to the American government.

Putin added that he hoped the Snowden case would not affect Russia's relations with the United States.

"We consider the attempts to accuse Russia of violation of U.S. laws and even some sort of conspiracy, which on top of all that are accompanied by threats, as absolutely ungrounded and unacceptable," Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said earlier on Tuesday. ?There are no legal grounds for such conduct of U.S. officials.?

Speaking in Saudi Arabia, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said, ?We are not looking for a confrontation. We are not ordering anybody. We are simply requesting under a very normal procedure for the transfer of somebody.?

(AP) ? Pope Francis' new commission of inquiry into the troubled Vatican bank has a brand new money-laundering case to look into: How a Holy See monsignor withdrew more than a half-million euros in charitable donations from the bank without any flags being raised, walked out of Vatican City with the cash, and then used the money to pay off his personal mortgage.

The case of Monsignor Nunzio Scarano is just one example of how lax norms and incompetence, if not more serious shortcomings at the Institute for Religious Works, or IOR, have sullied the Vatican's reputation in international financial circles and made it a target for Francis' clean-up and reform campaign.

Francis on Wednesday announced the creation of a commission of inquiry to look into the IOR's activities and legal status "to allow for a better harmonization with the universal mission of the Apostolic See," according to the legal document he signed creating it.

It was the second time in as many weeks that Francis has intervened to get information out of the IOR, a secretive institution best known for the scandals it has caused the Vatican. On June 15, he filled a key vacancy in the bank's governing structure, tapping a trusted prelate to be his eyes inside the bank.

Francis named five people to the commission, including two Americans: Monsignor Peter Wells, a top official in the Vatican secretariat of state, and Mary Ann Glendon, a Harvard law professor, former U.S. ambassador to the Holy See and current president of a pontifical academy.

American cardinals were among the most vocal in demanding a wholesale reform of the Vatican bureaucracy ? and the Vatican bank ? in the meetings outlining the priorities for the new pope in the run-up to the March conclave that elected Francis. The demands were raised following revelations in leaked documents last year that told of dysfunction, petty turf wars and allegations of corruption in the Holy See's governance.

Francis, who has made clear he has no patience for corruption and wants a "poor" church, has already named a separate commission of cardinals to advise him on the broader question of reforming the Vatican bureaucracy as a whole.

The Vatican bank was founded in 1942 by Pope Pius XII to manage assets destined for religious or charitable works. Located in a tower just inside the gates of Vatican City, it also manages the pension system for the Vatican's thousands of employees.

The bank commission's members have authority to gather documents, data and information about the bank's legal status and activities, even overriding normal secrecy rules to do so. Members can receive information from anyone in the Vatican bureaucracy as well as people who spontaneously volunteer information, and the commission can refer to outside advisers if necessary, according to the terms.

The commission will report back to Francis ? presumably with both information and recommendations ? and then will be dissolved, the document states. No timeframe was given but the commission is to start working soon.

The bank's daily management and activities continues unchanged.

The announcement came as the Vatican faces a new embarrassment involving the bank: Prosecutors in the southern city of Salerno have placed Scarano, an accountant in one of the Vatican's key finance offices, the Administration for the Patrimony of the Apostolic See, under investigation for alleged money-laundering stemming from his IOR account.

Scarano's attorney, Silverio Sica, told The Associated Press that the investigation concerns transactions Scarano made in 2009 in which he took 560,000 euros ($729,000) in cash out of his personal IOR bank account and carried it out of the Vatican and into Italy to help pay off a mortgage on his Salerno home.

To deposit the money into an Italian bank account ? and to prevent family members from finding out he had such a large chunk of cash ? he asked 56 close friends to accept 10,000 euros apiece in cash in exchange for a check or money transfer in the same amount, Sica said in a telephone interview. Scarano was then able to deposit the amounts in his Italian account.

"The money came from the Vatican. He wanted to bring it into Italy. He was advised to do it in this way," Sica said.

The original money came into Scarano's IOR account from donors who gave it to the prelate thinking they were funding a home for the terminally ill in Salerno, Sica said. He said the donors had "enormous" wealth and could offer such donations for his charitable efforts.

He said Scarano had given the names of the donors to prosecutors and insisted the origin of the money was clean, that the transactions didn't constitute money-laundering, and that he only took the money "temporarily" for his personal use.

The home for terminally ill hasn't been built, though the property has been identified, Sica said.

"He declares himself absolutely innocent," Sica said.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, confirmed Wednesday that Scarano had been suspended temporarily from his job and that the Vatican's financial watchdog agency, known by its acronym AIF, was "aware of the case and is taking ? if and where appropriate ? the necessary measures."

Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported over the weekend that the Bank of Italy had flagged the case to the AIF, seeking information about Scarano's IOR account as part of the Salerno probe. Lombardi didn't respond when asked why the IOR itself didn't flag such unusually large cash withdrawals back in 2009.

There have long been questions about just what the IOR actually is and does ? questions which the commission presumably will try to iron out for Francis. Vatican officials have long insisted it's not even a bank, since it doesn't perform key banking activities like making loans.

It does however take deposits, transfer money and invest for its clients, who include Vatican officials, members of religious orders and diplomats accredited to the Holy See. The bank performs asset management services that in 2012 helped earn it 86.6 million euros in profit on 7.1 billion euros in total assets under management.

Gettysburg residents seek black history museum

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (AP) ? Gettysburg's small African-American community proudly tells stories of ancestors who fought in the Civil War, of a young woman who shook President Abraham Lincoln's hand and of the men who buried thousands of bodies after the battle.

But they also speak of a struggle to preserve that history and of discrimination that continued long after the war ended ? even where Lincoln himself reminded Americans of our defining ideal: that all men are created equal.

"Our story here in this town, and in this state, and in this country has not been told," said Mary Alice Nutter, 68, who has been working to fulfill her mother's dying wish for an African-American history museum in the town where Union soldiers turned the tide of the Civil War, helping to end slavery in the United States.

A century and a half after the Battle of Gettysburg, the nascent museum project is aimed not only at chronicling the deeds of the black soldiers who fought there and those who buried the dead, but also the experiences of their descendants who can recall a civil rights struggle that persists in living memory.

Nutter and other members of the community have been collecting photographs, historical records, and oral histories for the museum project currently housed in a small temporary space.

One picture shows William Francis Penn, a Gettysburg battlefield guide, posing with a group of well-dressed African-Americans in front of a 1920s auto. Another is of Cecilia Eliza Jane Biggs ? who shook Lincoln's hand ? in a Victorian dress. There's the story of local veterinarian Basil Biggs, who was one of the men who received four cents per body to bury the dead after the battle, and the white Wert family, who aided the Underground Railroad.

Nutter, whose great-great grandfather, Lloyd F. A. Watts, served in the Union Army toward the end of the war and went on to become a respected teacher and preacher, said the project aims to correct a historical oversight: when she grew up local schools didn't mention that African-Americans fought during the Civil War ? or that segregation was being openly practiced in Gettysburg until the 1960s.

The path hasn't always been easy, but about two years ago she found Ron Bailey, a partner with new skills and energy. After retiring from a career with IBM, Bailey has used his organizational and people skills to tirelessly campaign for the museum.

"What we do have is one of the most amazing stories of black people in the U.S.," Bailey said. "We're looking for an angel donor."

Dick Peterson, a former Gettysburg borough council president who is white, said many local people are "coming to realize" that the stories of African-Americans haven't been properly told.

"We've given short-shrift to the black community in terms of their contribution to the war," said Peterson, 82, who called efforts to create the museum "exceedingly important."

James Paradis, a historian and author of the book "African-Americans and the Gettysburg Campaign," said many black families visited the battlefield to pay their respects in the decades after the Civil War, but numbers declined as more emphasis was placed on military strategy and Confederate forces. For example, reconciliation was a key theme at the 50th anniversary of the battle in 1913, and so Confederate veterans were invited.

"But the irony is just so bitter ? the black veterans were not invited to the 50th anniversary," Paradis said. "That's symbolic of what's happened. If you had been there at the time of the battle you would have seen thousands of blacks on both sides," serving as aides, cooks and other staff.

Nutter said the lofty ideals of the Gettysburg Address ? given to dedicate the Soldiers' National Cemetery ? was a mandatory topic in school, but the reality for African-Americans was, and is, different.

"What President Lincoln said is beautiful. Love it. Deep down love it. But this country, to this day, nationally, we're not living it," Nutter said.

Indeed, only a few years after the war a separate cemetery for black veterans was created in Gettysburg because they were "denied burial in the National Cemetery because of segregation policies," according to a historical marker placed in 2003.

The Rev. John Spangler of the Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary agreed that the stories of local African-Americans "have been far too invisible," even at the seminary, which was founded in 1826. "We haven't had the pride to tell it often and proudly enough," he said, though that's changing with new exhibits.

Nutter said she wouldn't change her childhood in Gettysburg "for anything" and spoke of support from friends in the white community. But she also remembered a time when blacks weren't allowed to sit downstairs in the local theatre, and that her mother used to tell stories about the Ku Klux Klan burning crosses in the yards of local families.

Jessie Smith, 64, recalled one local tavern that wouldn't allow African-Americans to enter by the front door. Once inside, they had to sit on buckets, not chairs.

"My growing up, there was a lot of prejudice and racism," she said.

Gettysburg wasn't alone, according to Pennsylvania's official Black History program, which notes that such discrimination continued through the 1950s and 1960s in many areas, including large cities.

"While there were no 'White Only' and 'Colored Only' signs to indicate a segregated facility in Pennsylvania, public places of business and recreation continued their distinctive Jim Crow approach that was informally in place," the program notes.

Other Gettysburg African-Americans said there have been improvements in recent decades.

"I didn't have many issues getting a job," said Stephanie Moses, 47, who credits older African-Americans for breaking down racial barriers.

Nutter said the museum aims to communicate untold stories in order to "bring some semblance of peace and understanding" to Gettysburg's complex racial legacy. Ultimately, it's a message for people of all races, she said.

"All of us, we're mixed with white, anyway," Nutter said. "And today, at our reunions... there are mixed marriages like you wouldn't believe. Who cares what color, or whatever, any more."

"I hope this enlightens all people," Nutter said of the museum. "I'm looking for love and peace and kindness among all people, regardless of race."

But she added that "you've got to try and see things from other people's viewpoint" in order to get that peace.

Mutua Madrileña funds IDIBELL and ICO project to improve diagnosis of Lynch syndrome

Mutua Madrile?a funds IDIBELL and ICO project to improve diagnosis of Lynch syndrome [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 25-Jun-2013

IDIBELL-Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute

The Fundacin Mutua Madrilea, in its 10th Call for Aids to Research, has selected a project to improve the diagnosis of Lynch syndrome led by researcher Marta Pineda, from the Hereditary Cancer research group of the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) and the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO). The aid is provided with 33,000 euros and has a duration of two years.

Hereditary predisposition to cancer

Lynch syndrome is a hereditary predisposition to cancer caused by germline mutations in DNA repair genes. Families with Lynch syndrome have a higher risk of developing several types of cancer, especially of colon and endometrium.

Mutational analysis of repair genes often identifies genetic variants of unknown significance, of which we cannot predict its biological significance and clinical consequences. Identification of a variant of unknown significance is an important limitation for proper risk assessment of cancer predisposition. Such variants represent a 30% of the alterations detected in mutational analysis repair genes.

The aim of the project funded by the Fundacin Mutua Madrilea is to study the pathogenicity of the variants identified in repair genes MSH2 and MSH6.

The funding of this project will imply the incorporation of the functional study of these variants in the routine of the Molecular Diagnostic Unit of ICO and a significant improvement in molecular diagnostics of Lynch syndrome.

The determination of the pathogenicity of a variant is essential to help Genetic Counselling Units in doing family counselling and allows predictive studies of risk and prevention measures and an adequate monitoring.

Improvements in diagnosis

On the other hand, together with the announcement of this aid, the researchers of the hereditary cancer group at IDIBELL and ICO, under the direction of Gabriel Capell have published in the Journal of Medical Genetics a study identifying the first PMS2 mutations in Spain. The study also involved the Institute of Medicine and Molecular Oncology of Asturias (IMOMA) and the University of Frankfurt.

Mutational analysis of PMS2 is particularly complex since there are multiple pseudogenes (sequences similar to that of our genes but with no protein expression capacity) that hinder it. The IMOMA uses a special methodology that avoids pseudogenes and identifies mutations in PMS2 in a more reliable way. Subsequently, the functional study of variants of unknown significance made by ICO and the University of Frankfurt has allowed classifying the variants identified in the PMS2 gene.

This exhaustive strategy of molecular study in the genetic analysis of PMS2 gene has allowed the identification of mutations responsible for the syndrome in 69% of the analyzed patients.

Witness recalls efforts to save wounded Trayvon Martin

LIVE VIDEO ? George Zimmerman faces charges of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

By James Novogrod, Tom Winter and Tracy Connor, NBC News

The jury in the George Zimmerman trial was shown photos Tuesday of Trayvon Martin?s body and a closeup of a chest wound as a police sergeant testified about his attempts to save the teenager?s life.

Sgt. Anthony Raimondo of the Sanford, Fla., police department told jurors how he arrived at the shooting scene, in the evening drizzle, on Feb. 26, 2012, to find Zimmerman handcuffed by another officer.

Martin?s body was on the grass, facedown with his hands under him, Raimondo said.

He said he checked the 17-year-old for a pulse and found none and then turned him over to perform CPR.?

?I breathed for Mr. Martin -- or I tried to,? Raimondo said, adding that the other officer performed the chest compressions.

Editor's note: Photos from the crime scene, which some readers might find disturbing, are included below.

Raimondo said there was a bubbling noise ? the sound of air escaping from the chest wound -- and he asked for plastic wrap and Vaseline so he could create an airtight seal around it. A passerby brought him a plastic bag.

The sergeant testified that he sat the body upright to feel for an exit wound and felt a cold can in Martin?s hooded sweatshirt pocket ? the Arizona brand fruit drink he had purchased at a 7-Eleven where he also bought Skittles for a his father?s girlfriend?s young son.

Raimondo laid the body back down to continue CPR, but could not revive Martin. After a rescue crew arrived and pronounced Martin dead, Raimondo put an emergency blanket over the body, he testified.

While the 14-year veteran was on the stand, prosecutors displayed pictures of Martin?s body facedown on the grass, face-up after the CPR attempt, and under the emergency blanket. There was also a photo of what appeared to be a coin-sized chest wound. Martin?s father left the courtroom as the pictures were shown.

It was the most graphic evidence to date in the trial, which began in earnest Monday with opening statements. Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, claiming he shot Martin in self-defense.

Earlier testimony on Tuesday focused on Zimmerman?s experience with a neighborhood watch program, with a ?civilian employee for the Sanford, Fla., police department saying he struck her as ?meek? but civic-minded and ?professional.?

Wendy Dorival said that as part of her job, she assisted neighborhood watch programs, which enlist residents to be the ?eyes and ears? of the police department and alert authorities to suspicious activity.

Dorival met with Zimmerman in September 2011 to help him launch a neighborhood watch, and later tried to recruit him for the Citizens on Patrol program -- a more intensive volunteer squad that offers training, uniforms, and a vehicle to participants. He declined, she said.

?He seemed a little meek,? Dorival testified under cross-examination on the second day of testimony in the second-degree murder trial. ?He seemed like he really wanted to make changes in his community to make it better.?

Sanford Police Dept.

This crime scene photo presented by prosecutors for the State of Florida shows Trayvon Martin's body from the night of the shooting in February 2012. The photo was entered as evidence during George Zimmerman's trial in Seminole circuit court June 25, 2013 in Sanford, Fla.

Dorival was put on the stand by prosecutors, who contend Zimmerman ?profiled? Martin as the unarmed teen walked through a gated community on Feb. 26, 2012, then shot him through the heart during a confrontation.

The defense says Martin, 17, was the aggressor and ?viciously? attacked Zimmerman, 29, forcing him to shoot in self-defense.

Dorival said she tells neighborhood watch volunteers like Zimmerman they are observers who alert police to possible problems and don?t take action themselves.

Asked what watch volunteers are told about following and confronting people, Dorival said, ?We tell them don?t do that. That?s the job of law enforcement.?

A handbook that Dorival gave to watch groups, which was shown to her on the stand, contained a page that read: "Neighborhood watch is not the vigilante police."

When she was questioned by the defense, Dorival had mainly positive things to say about her contacts with Zimmerman, calling him professional. She also said he wrote a complimentary letter about her to the police chief and that she thanked him for it.

Prosecutors want to play for the jury five calls that Zimmerman made to a non-emergency police dispatcher between August 2011 and Feb. 2, 2012 to report people or activity he found suspicious.

They said the prior calls would give the jury insight into Zimmerman?s state of mind when he encountered Martin, which is important since Florida law requires proof of a so-called "depraved mind? for a second-degree murder conviction.

The defense contends that the prior calls have no bearing on Zimmerman?s fatal confrontation with Martin.

The judge has not yet ruled on whether the jury can hear the calls.

Editor?s note: George Zimmerman has sued NBC Universal for defamation. The company has strongly denied the allegations.

Shopping For The Perfect Cycling Bicycle? - ArticleSnatch.com

There are several different reasons people choose to cycle as a mode of transportation. You may not even choose to ride a bicycle as a means of transportation at all. Lots of people go cycling as a form of exercise. Some people cycle as a competitive sport. Another group of individuals take pleasure in a simple, relaxed ride through their neighborhood. Whatever the reason you have for wanting a cycling bicycle, there are a lot of different things to consider when you are trying to decide which cycling bicycle is right for you. Try these tips out to see if they can be of help.
Cost is almost always a factor when trying to choose the right bike. This doesn't mean other things aren't important, like where you are going to ride or how often you will, but it does mean that the cost of the bicycle should be one of your main concerns.
Good bicycles can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars. That doesn't mean all bicycles are going to cost that much, so don't worry; there is no reason why you can't find a great bicycle that is in your price range. You can go to auctions and find some of the best bikes available for a fraction of the price of new ones. Your bicycle seat should not be at the lowest setting, which is sitting atop the crossbar. You want to adjust it up a few inches and take those inches into account when you are choosing your bike. You will have a much more comfortable experience when riding if you are able to get some clearance between the crossbar of the bicycle and you. The goal here is to create a height with your seat so that when your pedal is at its lowest position your leg should be almost (but not quite) fully extended.
Where you set the angle of your seat is also something to consider. The seat is designed to be tilted any way you want it to. You might find that a perfectly flat seat is a little uncomfortable and that you prefer to lean forward a little bit. Find the position that will be most comfortable to you, and stick with it. You could leave it as it is, but the narrow part of the seat might not allow you to rest comfortably in a forward leaning position.
There are lots of things to think about when you are buying a cycling bicycle. You have innumerable decisions to make as you choose how safe a bike to buy, as well as one that is pleasing to the eye. Feeling a little defeated at the outset of choosing your new bike is normal. Do your research and then you'll feel better prepared to choose your new bike.
Try to understand your choices before you go shopping. The peace it will offer during shopping makes it very worthwhile.

Shawn Amos: WATCH: Content Shines At Cannes

The big winner at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity? Content.

Agencies, executives and thought leaders from around the world gathered in the French Riviera this week to celebrate the best in advertising and communication, and to honor campaigns that span television, print, radio, social media, mobile and more.

Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, the Festival received 35,765 entries from 92 countries. The big winners were campaigns that set aside the hard-sell and focused on bringing thought-provoking and entertaining content to their audiences.

"Dumb Ways To Die," a campaign for Metro Trains in Melbourne, Australia, aimed at promoting rail safety, was the festival's big winner, with 5 total Grand Prix awards - a new record.

Its clever and insanely catchy song topped iTunes charts in several countries, while the accompanying video, depicting cartoon characters dying in, well, dumb ways, has already been seen by more than 50 million people (fair warning: you will not be able to get the tune out of your head). It also featured a mobile game, a book, interactive posters and radio advertising.

The result? Just three months after the launch, Metro saw a 21% reduction in accidents and deaths compared to a year ago, and a million people signed pledges on the website to be safe around trains.

Remember that Dove "Real Beauty" viral video from a few months ago? It was Cannes' Titanium Grand Prix winner. The video featured a sketch artist who drew various women based on their own descriptions, and then based on others' descriptions; the vastly different results hit home with women worldwide.

Another big winner was Toshiba/Intel's "The Beauty Inside," which took home the Grand Prix in the Branded Content and Entertainment category. The six-episode social film featured a main character who woke up as a different person every morning. Topher Grace played the lead, Alex, but the campaign encouraged fans to submit their own video diaries to play the character. It also won an Emmy recently at the Daytime Emmy Awards.

"Branded Content and Entertainment" is a new category, added just last year, and it highlights the importance that content, in all forms, plays in the modern advertising and marketing world. Last year's inaugural winner was Chipotle's emotional "Back to the Start" commercial, which gained national prominence during the 2012 Grammy Awards.

Find out more about the festival in the latest episode of "The Content Brief" from Freshwire below.

Catch up on the video game console wars with last week's episode right here.

Alpinestars' Atem Might Be the Safest Motorcycle Jacket You Can Buy

Nearly all motorcycle jackets available today have bits and pieces that are CE certified but never before has an entire garment?not just the elbows, shoulder and back armor?been CE certified for rider safety, like Alpinestars' Atem jacket and suit. After a 12 month-long gestation period and a myriad of new testing processes, the Atem is about as high tech as any modern high performance motorcycle.

In contrast to other jackets, which only include CE armor in the shoulder, elbow and back, the entire Atem jacket was subjected to a series of tests that mimic crash-like conditions. The first of which is an abrasion test that simulates a slide along the pavement. A portion of the Atem's 1.3mm leather hide is weighted and then dropped several times from every conceivable direction onto a rotating belt with a 60 grit sandpaper-like surface. If the garment can survive for more than 4 seconds, it passes the test and is granted Level 1 certification. The Atem surpassed Level 2, which requires it to remain intact for more than seven seconds.

Alpinestars' Atem Might Be the Safest Motorcycle Jacket You Can Buy

The second test, the impact cut test, simulates encountering a piece of debris, like glass, while sliding on the road. This time, a portion of the jacket is stretched and mounted onto a block with a rectangular hole. A blade-like "striker" is then dropped from a meter up, traveling at 9.2 feet per second for impact right above the hole. For Level 1 certification, the max penetration depth should be no more than 25mm. The Atem qualified for Level 2 status, which is set at no more than 15mm.

Alpinestars' Atem Might Be the Safest Motorcycle Jacket You Can Buy

Next is the burst strength test that evaluates the rigidity and hardiness of the garment and seams when hit with extreme force, like in a crash. A circular sample is placed over a diaphragm that's clamped around the edges and is then inflated into a dome shape. The pressure required for Level 1 status is about 98 psi, and Level 2 is even higher at 112 psi. And yes, the Atem achieved Level 2 status in this test, too.

Alpinestars' Atem Might Be the Safest Motorcycle Jacket You Can Buy

Sliding along the pavement at any speed can cause the jacket to move and shift in the opposite direction in which you're sliding, but the Atem comes with adjustable cuffs in the sleeve and ankles (for the suit version) that keep everything in place, decreasing the chances of road rash. The cone test applies about 6.6lbs of pressure into the sleeve for 60 seconds, and if it moves no more than 60mm, the garment attains Level 1 status.

Though they achieved nearly every Level 2 certification, the Atem suit and jacket are still only rated at Level 1, because Alpinestars felt it important not to compromise fit and comfort in non-impact areas, like the armpits. Nearly every technological detail from professional MotoGP and WSBK race suits have trickled down into the Atem suit and jacket. The Atem does, however, lack the airbag system found in the race replica version and the accordion panels in the back and knees that allow for greater mobility, which more or less account for the $1400 difference in price. The Atem suit retails for $1500, while the jacket goes for $700.

So is the Atem the safest suit or jacket you can buy? Every crash is unique and no two are alike, so protective gear can only do so much. But knowing that the entire jacket/suit?and not just the hard bits?will keep you safe in a crash is heartening nonetheless. [Alpinestars]

Samsung Ativ Q tablet runs Windows, Android | FP Tech Desk ...

Samsung Electronics Co., the biggest mobile-phone maker, introduced its first tablet that can run both Microsoft Corp.?s Windows 8 and applications based on Google Inc.?s Android software.

The ATIV Q tablet will let users share files between Windows 8 and Android applications, Samsung said at an event to unveil the new device in London Thursday. The hinged device also has a keyboard that lets the tablet operate like a laptop.

Samsung is chipping away at Apple Inc.?s dominance in tablet devices, touting rival operating systems as it mimics the strategy that made it the most popular mobile-phone maker. Shipments of Samsung tablets, No. 2 to Apple, more than tripled in the first quarter from a year earlier, giving the Suwon, South Korea-based company 18% of the market, according to a May report from researcher IDC. Apple, with about 40% of the market, saw shipments rise 65%.

Tablets, which are touchscreen computers that occupy a space between laptops and smartphones, are expected to surpass shipments of personal computers by 2015, researcher IDC said in a report last month. Tablet shipments will grow 45% from this year to 332.4 million as PCs decline.

Apple?s iPad started the boom when the device was released in 2010. Cheaper alternatives to the iPad, which is priced from $399, will drive wider adoption, IDC said. Cupertino, California-based Apple began selling the iPad Mini last year, which is priced from $329 on the company?s website.

Samsung also introduced the ATIV Tab 3, which it?s billing as the thinnest Windows 8 tablet, at approximately the thickness of a smartphone, with a 10-hour battery life. In the Galaxy line, they premiered the Galaxy NX camera, which can connect to 4G and runs on Android, allowing access to applications like mail, music and maps.

On the PC side, Samsung debuted three new Windows 8 computers under the ATIV label, with technology that lets users sync mobile devices with their computer more easily.

Microsoft introduced Windows 8, a reworked version of its flagship operating system, to tablet users as it confronts the slump in PC sales. Microsoft has also released its own tablet, Surface, which has struggled to gain market share against Apple and Samsung.

Men who can't produce sperm face increased cancer risk

June 20, 2013 ? Men who are diagnosed as azoospermic -- infertile because of an absence of sperm in their ejaculate -- are more prone to developing cancer than the general population, a study led by a Stanford University School of Medicine urologist has found. And a diagnosis of azoospermia before age 30 carries an eight-fold cancer risk, the study says.

"An azoospermic man's risk for developing cancer is similar to that for a typical man 10 years older," said Michael Eisenberg, MD, PhD, assistant professor of urology at the medical school and director of male reproductive medicine and surgery at Stanford Hospital & Clinics. Eisenberg is lead author of the study, published online June 20 in Fertility and Sterility.

Diagnoses of male infertility and azoospermia are surprisingly common in the United States. About 4 million American men -- 15 percent of those ages 15-45 -- are infertile. Of these, some 600,000 -- about 1 percent of those of reproductive age -- are azoospermic. "There is evidence that infertility may be a barometer for men's overall health," Eisenberg said, "and a few studies have found an association of male infertility with testicular cancer." The new study, he said, not only assigns the bulk of infertile men's increased cancer risk to those with azoospermia, but also suggests that this risk extends beyond testicular cancer.

Eisenberg conducted most of the analysis for the study at Stanford, using data gathered from the Texas Cancer Registry and the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where he completed his medical training. The study's senior authors are Larry Lipshultz, MD, and Dolores Lamb, PhD, professors of urology at Baylor.

The study population consisted of 2,238 infertile men who were seen at a Baylor andrology clinic from 1989 to 2009. Their median age was 35.7 when they were first evaluated for the cause of their infertility. Of those men, 451 had azoospermia, and 1,787 did not. There were otherwise no apparent initial differences between the two groups.

Azoospermia can arise for two reasons. Obstructive azoospermia is caused by a blockage that prevents otherwise plentiful, fit sperm produced in the testes from reaching the ejaculate. But a screen of about one-fourth of the azoospermic men in the study population indicated that the vast majority suffered from the non-obstructive variety: Their testes didn't produce enough sperm for any to reach their ejaculate, most likely because of genetic deficiencies of one sort or another. Fully one-fourth of all the genes in the human genome play some role in reproduction, Eisenberg noted, so there are a lot of ways for the capacity to sire offspring to go astray.

After undergoing a semen analysis, the men were followed for an average of 6.7 years to see which of them turned up in the Texas Cancer Registry. (Fortunately for the analysis, most people tend to stay in the state where they've grown up, said Eisenberg.) Their rates of diagnosed cancer incidence were then compared with age-adjusted cancer-diagnosis statistics of Texas men in general.

In all, a total of 29 of the 2,238 infertile men developed cancer over a 5.8-year average period from their semen analysis to their cancer diagnosis. This contrasted with an expected 16.7 cases, on an age-adjusted basis, for the male Texas population in general (which, Eisenberg said, closely reflects cancer incidence rates for the entire U.S. population). This meant that infertile men were 1.7 times as likely to develop cancer as men in the general population. This is considered a moderately increased risk.

But comparing the cancer risk of azoospermic and nonazoospermic infertile men revealed a major disparity: The azoospermic men were at a substantially elevated risk -- nearly three times as likely to receive a diagnosis of cancer as men in the overall population. Infertile men who weren't azoospermic, in contrast, exhibited a statistically insignificant increased cancer risk of only 1.4 times that of men in the overall population.

By excluding men whose cancer diagnosis came within two or three years of their infertility evaluation, the researchers were able to rule out the possibility that azoospermia caused by an undiagnosed cancer had affected the statistics.

While the study wasn't large enough to delineate which specific types of cancer pushed azoospermic men's incidence rates up, the diagnoses they received covered a wide range of cancers: brain, prostate and stomach tumors, as well as melanoma, lymphoma, testicular cancer and cancer of the small intestine. The findings suggest that genetic defects that result in azoospermia may also broadly increase a man's vulnerability to cancer, Eisenberg said, supporting the notion that azoospermia and cancer vulnerability may share common genetic causes.

The study, which was funded by the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development, is the first to examine the cancer risk of azoospermia in particular, or to link it to non-germ-cell cancers. Previous studies have failed to consistently identify any increased risk for nontesticular cancers in infertile men, whether azoospermic or otherwise. In those previous studies, however, azoospermic men couldn't be separately examined because sperm analyses weren't available.

Most striking of all, said Eisenberg, was the cancer risk among azoospermic men who first had their semen analyzed before age 30. They were more than eight times as likely to subsequently develop cancer than Texas males in the general population of the same age. In contrast, there was no relationship between age of semen analysis and risk of cancer for nonazoospermic men.

The good news, Eisenberg said, is that while the cancer risk among young azoospermic men was quite large compared to their same-age peers, their relative youth means that their absolute risk of contracting cancer during the follow-up period remained small. The bad news, he said, is that men in their 30s often don't have a primary health-care provider. He advised that young men who are diagnosed as azoospermic should be aware of their heightened risk and make sure to get periodic checkups with that in mind.
