Sony, Blu-Ray makers sue Imation over blank discs

Imation Corp.'s line of blank Blu-Ray discs has drawn a lawsuit by Sony Corp. and other Blu-Ray inventors who say that the data storage company is infringing on their patents.

Bloomberg reports that One-Blue ? a consortium created by Sony, Panasonic Corp., Pioneer Corp. and Koninklijke Philips ? claims in the suit that Oakdale-based Imation violates several patents, wrongly includes the official Blu-Ray logo and encourages consumers to break the law when they record something. An official at Imation (NYSE: IMN) didn't comment.

Imation isn't the only maker of blank Blu-Ray discs, and it's not exactly new to the market (it launched its Blu-Ray products in 2006).

Joe Francis apologizes for 'appalling' interview

Joe Francis.

Joe Francis is apologizing for "appalling" remarks he made in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, where the "Girls Gone Wild" founder railed against "mentally f------ retarded" jurors in his latest legal dust-up and said they "should all be lined up and shot!"

Joe Francis juror responds to 'retarded' slam

Francis issued this statement Thursday morning:

I deeply regret the remarks attributed to me in the interview with the Hollywood Reporter. They were hurtful and do not reflect my true feelings. While I disagree with the jury's verdict as I am completely innocent of the charges and intend to appeal, I was afforded a fair trial, and if I lose at the appellate level, I will reluctantly but fully accept the jury's verdict. This was a 6 hour interview with the Hollywood reporter where I detailed to the reporter all of the evidence and why I believed the evidence showed I am 100% innocent. The reporter also interviewed my attorney David Houston for over 3 hours, but failed to include one shred of evidence from the trial that proved beyond a reasonable doubt my innocence. I did NOT commit a crime at all whatsoever. All that was publicized were my most intemperate remarks that were borne out of frustration but with no intent to cause anyone harm. I am not, nor have I ever been a violent person. My comments are appalling, but anyone who has ever been wrongfully convicted of a crime that they did NOT commit would be as frustrated as I am. I want to apologize to all the jurors, the court, the City Attorney and my attorneys for my comments that were manipulated by the media, and please know I am truly ashamed of my conduct. I am truly, truly sorry. I hope everyone will understand I was not being serious and that I fully and deeply apologize for my remarks.

Stocks rise on Fed stimulus hopes, home sales

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks are moving higher Wednesday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said it was too soon for the central bank to pull back on its economic stimulus programs.

Investors were also encouraged by news that sales of previously-occupied U.S. homes rose last month to the highest level in three and a half years.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 40 points before Bernanke began his testimony before a congressional committee, then jumped as much as 154 points shortly after he began speaking at 10 a.m. That's also when the National Association of Realtors released its report on home sales.

The Dow pared its gain after Bernanke told lawmakers in a question-and-answer session that the central bank could not rule out tapering its stimulus programs by the fall.

By noon Eastern Daylight Time the Dow was up 114 points at 15,503, an increase of 0.7 percent.

The Standard and Poor's 500 index rose 10 points to 1,679, an increase of 0.6 percent.

The Federal Reserve has been keeping short-term interest rates near zero to encourage people and businesses to borrow and spend more. The Fed has also been buying $85 billion worth of bonds each month to push down long-term interest rates.

Later on Wednesday, the Fed will also release minutes of its latest policy meeting.

Among stocks making big moves:

?Bristol-Myers Squibb jumped 6 percent, or $2.55, to $46.61 after a Citigroup analyst raised his rating on the drugmaker. The analyst said the company could be a big winner with a group of cancer treatments under development.

?Saks rose $1.93, or 14 percent, after The New York Post reported the luxury retailer had hired Goldman Sachs to explore options for the company, including a possible sale. A spokesman for Saks declined to comment.

?Target fell $2.21, or 3 percent, to $69.51 after announcing a 26 percent drop in first-quarter profits. The company also said full-year earnings may come in lower than previously expected.

? Homebuilders rose after the home sales report came out. Lennar rose $1.18 to $43.65, or 3 percent. Pulte rose 42 cents to $23.47, or 2 percent. Toll Brothers, which also reported a 46 percent surge in second-quarter earnings, jumped $2.63, or 7 percent, to $38.63.

On Tuesday, stocks rose after James Bullard, president of the St. Louis branch of the Federal Reserve, told an audience in Germany that the central bank should continue buying bonds.

Both the Dow and the S&P 500 are up 18 percent since the start of the year.

The Russell 2000 index of small-company stocks rose six points to 1,005, a gain of 0.7 percent. The index is headed for its first close above 1,000 points.

The Dow, S&P and Russell are at record highs.

The Nasdaq composite was up 18 points at 3,520, or 0.5 percent.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.97 percent from 1.93 percent late Tuesday. The price of gold rose $2.90 to $1,380 an ounce, an increase of 0.2 percent. Crude oil fell $1.16 to $95.02 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Shell says hunt for new CEO is underway

By Andrew Callus

THE HAGUE (Reuters) - The hunt for Royal Dutch Shell's next chief executive is underway, its chairman said on Tuesday, after CEO Peter Voser made what could be his last appearance at the oil group's annual shareholder meeting.

Voser announced his surprise decision three weeks ago to step down in the first half of 2014, before his 56th birthday, and less than five years into the role.

"The process has started," Shell chairman Jorma Ollila told Reuters after the meeting when asked about the succession plan.

Ollila chairs the three-man nomination and succession committee that will choose Voser's replacement.

Voser has been a pillar of Shell's new-found stability since he re-joined the company as finance director in October 2004 as part of a wholesale clear-out of disgraced former top management following a reserves accounting scandal.

Employees of the 180-year old Anglo-Dutch group, which traditionally grows its own top executives, believe an import is unlikely to get the top job, but Voser is only the second person to hold the CEO role under a simplified corporate structure introduced in 2005.

A small investor in the company told Reuters he expected Shell to appoint someone in Voser's mould and he thought it likely to be an internal candidate.

"I am not expecting any great changes in management style at all. It will be more of the same at Shell," Chris White, a portfolio manager at Premier Fund Managers, said.

Inside Shell, the current finance director, Simon Henry, is regarded as a potential front-runner, along with Marvin Odum, the company's head of upstream operations in the Americas.

Henry has a mathematics and accounting background even though, like Odum, he joined the company as an engineer. Odum would be Shell's first American CEO.

Andrew Brown, who became head of international upstream last year, could be a candidate too, as could director of projects and technology Matthias Bichsel. One company source said Brown's relatively recent appointment may make him an outside bet, while Bichsel, born in 1954, might be considered too old for the job.

Shell, the world number two investor-controlled oil company by production behind Exxon-Mobil , has said it will look outside for Voser's replacement as well as inside.

Voser leaves Shell with a leading global production and technology position in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and gas to liquids. Shell is also strong in oil exploration and offshore production in the Gulf of Mexico and West Africa, and has a well-developed relationship with China, where the oil industry has strong growth potential, plus long-term assets in Canadian oil sands.

But the group suffers regular sabotage and theft from its onshore installations in Nigeria, where it is the biggest western producer, and has made little progress with its costly Arctic drilling program in recent years.

Like its big rivals, Shell is being squeezed by rising finding and development costs as prices and demand stagnate.

The other two members of Shell's succession committee, drawn from the ranks of its non-executive directors, are Josef Ackermann, the former Deutsche Bank chief, and Hans Wijers, who ran Dutch chemicals group Akzo Nobel until 2012.

Microsoft's Don Mattrick talks Xbox One, calls backwards compatibility backwards

One of the more controversial bits of news to come out of yesterday's Xbox One reveal was the discovery that the newly christened console would not be able to play Xbox 360 games. Backwards compatibility has been a sore subject for some gamers but Microsoft's Don Mattrick says the company is looking forward, not back. "If you're backwards compatible," he told The Wall Street Journal, "you're really backwards."

While the news was met with some chagrin, it's not terribly surprising. The Xbox One's architecture -- equipped with a new x86 CPU -- prevents it from being able to run games designed for the 360's eight year old Xenon processor. Additionally, Mattrick claims that players making use of backwards compatibility were a negligible percentage of their consumer base. While Mattrick's words are sure to stick in more than one craw, they reflect the reality of the market. With Nintendo struggling to juggle Wii games on the Wii U and Sony's Playstation 4 abandoning current gen PSN games, it looks like backwards compatibility is a thing of the past.

'All you could hear were screams?

Two men stand in front of Plaza Towers Elementary after a tornado destroyed the school on Monday. (Bryan Terry/AP/The??

[Updated at 10:47 a.m. CT]

MOORE, Okla. ? The hell he saw was harrowing, but it?s the sounds at Plaza Towers Elementary that Stuart Earnest Jr. says will haunt him forever.

?All you could hear were screams,? Earnest said. ?The people screaming for help. And the people trying to help were also screaming.?

Plaza Towers, a pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade school, took a direct hit when a titanic tornado chewed a deadly and destructive 20-mile path through Newcastle, Moore and parts of southern Oklahoma City for 40 minutes Monday afternoon.

State officials have adjusted the number of casualties a few times since the tragedy. Tuesday morning, Reuters quoted Amy Elliott, chief administrative officer at the Oklahoma City Medical Examiner's Office, as saying the death toll had been reduced to 24 for now.

"There was a lot of chaos," Elliott said.

Officials said some of the dead are children. KFOR reported that at least 233 people were injured by the storm.

"Not to be pessimistic... but we think the death toll will continue to climb as we find more bodies," Lt. Gov. Todd Lamb said on CNN Tuesday morning.

President Barack Obama said FEMA officials and staff were on the ground in the area, and that the federal government would help with the disaster response. "The people of Moore should know that their country will remain on the ground there for them, beside them, as long as it takes for their homes and schools to rebuild, businesses and hospitals to reopen, the parents to console, the first responders to comfort and of course frightened children who will need our continued love and attention," Obama said Tuesday morning at a press conference.

Classes were still in session at Plaza Towers when the twister, estimated to be packing winds of 200 mph or greater, crushed nearly every corner of the school. Teachers? cars were thrown into the building, and the playground no longer exists.

?I can only hope those little kids killed didn't suffer,? said Earnest, one of many who rushed to the school to help survivors.

[In tornado's wake, worried parents seek out kids]

With several students still unaccounted for, rescuers worked overnight digging through the rubble.

?I just hope they find her,? Shannon Galarneau said of her 10-year-old niece, a Plaza Towers student who was missing as of early Tuesday morning. ?You just feel helpless.?

The girl's younger sister, also a student at the school, suffered cuts to her head and bruises on her back. The 8-year-old was still wearing her hospital bracelet while asleep on her grandmother's shoulder in the front seat of a pickup truck just after midnight.

?She said it was probably the scariest day of her life,? Galarneau said.

The child was among more than 230 reportedly injured by the tornado, which some estimated to be greater than a mile wide at times. Its path was nearly identical to the one taken by a record-breaking May 1999 tornado that devastated the area.

Galarneau and her husband could see the twister a mile and a half from their front porch and scrambled to hide.

?It barreled down fast,? said Galarneau, who found refuge in a utility closet.

[How to Help: Oklahoma storms]

President Barack Obama declared several Oklahoma counties disaster areas and pledged to support the area's rescue and recovery. The funnel?s fury crumbled homes for several blocks around the school and in other parts of Moore. Missing street signs and other landmarks made some neighborhoods unrecognizable even to locals.

?It is a barren wasteland,? Galarneau said. ?Everything is leveled.?

Allen and JoAnn Anderson huddled under quilts and pillows in their bathtub with their Yorkie, Magand, and cat, Meow, when the tornado came down their street.

?It was like standing in the middle of a train track and having the train go right over you,? said Allen, 63.

They emerged from the tub 15 minutes later to find their brick house gone and cars badly damaged.

?There?s no house. It?s just a pile of rubble,? Allen said.

The couple checked into a motel with their pets late Monday. Chunks of attic insulation were still stuck in JoAnn?s sandy-blond hair, and her legs were partially caked in dried mud.

?It could be worse,? JoAnn said. ?We're alive.?

Air pollution and noise pollution increase cardiovascular risk

May 20, 2013 ? Both fine-particle air pollution and noise pollution may increase a person's risk of developing cardiovascular disease, according to German researchers who have conducted a large population study, in which both factors were considered simultaneously.

"Many studies have looked at air pollution, while others have looked at noise pollution," said study leader Barbara Hoffmann, MD, MPH, a professor of environmental epidemiology at the IUF Leibniz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine in Germany. "This study looked at both at the same time and found that each form of pollution was independently associated with subclinical atherosclerosis."

The research will be presented at ATS 2013.

"This study is important because it says that both air pollution and noise pollution represent important health problems," said Dr. Philip Harber, a professor of public health at the University of Arizona who was not involved in the research. "In the past, some air pollution studies have been dismissed because critics said it was probably the noise pollution that caused the harm, and vice versa. Now we know that people who live near highways, for instance, are being harmed by air pollution and by noise pollution."

Using data from the Heinz Nixdorf Recall study, an ongoing population study from three neighboring cities in the Ruhr region of Germany, Dr. Hoffmann and her colleagues assessed the long-term exposure to fine particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter <2.5 ?m (PM2.5) and long-term exposure to traffic noise in 4238 study participants (mean age 60 years, 49.9% male).

The exposure to air pollutants was calculated using the EURopean Air Pollution Disperson, or EURAD, model. Exposure to traffic noise was calculated using European Union models of outdoor traffic noise levels. These levels were quantified as weighted 24-hour mean exposure (Lden) and nighttime exposure (Lnight).

To determine the association of the two variables with cardiovascular risk, the researchers looked at thoracic aortic calcification (TAC), a measure of subclinical atherosclerosis.

TAC was quantified using non-contrast enhanced electron beam computed tomography. Using multiple linear regression, the researchers controlled for other cardiovascular risk factors, including age, gender, education, unemployment, smoking status and history, exposure to second-hand smoke, physical activity, alcohol use and body mass index.

After controlling for these variables, the researchers found that fine-particle air pollution was associated with an increase in TAC burden by 19.9 % (95%CI 8.2; 32.8%) per 2.4?g/m3. (To put that increase in perspective: in the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency recently revised the overall limit downward from 15 to 12?g/m 3).

The researchers also found that nighttime traffic noise pollution increased TAC burden by 8% (95% CI 0.8; 8.9%) per 5 dB. (An average living room would typically have a noise level of about 40 A-weighted decibels, or dB(A), an expression of the relative loudness of sounds as perceived by the human ear, while busy road traffic would generate about 70-80dB(A)). Mean exposure to traffic noise over 24 hours was not associated with increased TAC.

Among subgroups of participants, the researchers found even stronger associations. The interaction of PM2.5 and TAC was clearer among those younger than 65, participants with prevalent coronary artery disease and those taking statins. In contrast, the effect of Lnight was stronger in participants who were not obese, did not have coronary artery disease and did not take statins.

Although the cross-sectional design of this study limits the causal interpretation of the data, Dr. Hoffmann said, "both exposures seem to be important and both must be considered on a population level, rather than focusing on just one hazard."

She added that her research group plans to conduct a longitudinal analysis with repeated measures of TAC over time.

Suicide bomber kills 14 at Afghan province council

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A suicide bomber struck outside a provincial council headquarters in northern Afghanistan on Monday, killing the council chief and at least 13 others, authorities said. The Taliban insurgency quickly claimed responsibility.

Seeking to weaken the Afghan government, Taliban insurgents have been carrying out attacks and assassinations intended to intimidate both officials and civilians ahead of next year's withdrawal of most international troops.

Baghlan provincial council leader Mohammad Rasoul Mohseni was entering the compound in the morning when the bomber ran up on foot and detonated his explosives in the provincial capital of Pul-e-Khumri, said Baghlan chief of police Asadullah Sherzad.

He said 14 people were killed, including Mohseni, and 11 were wounded.

Mohammad Zahier Ghanizada, a member of parliament from Baghlan, confirmed the council chief's death and added that Mohseni had previously received multiple death threats.

Also killed in the attack were six police bodyguards and seven civilians, Sherzad said.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed in a text message to journalists that an insurgent operative carried out the targeted bombing.

"Today at 11 a.m. in front of the Baghlan provincial council office, we have carried out a suicide attack and killed the head of the council," it said.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the bombing Monday.

"Such attacks are against all human rights and the principles of Islam," Karzai said in a statement. "Perpetrators of such attacks are enemies of the Afghan nation and the puppets of foreigners."

Karzai left later Monday for a two-day state visit to India, where he is expected to request military aid.

Both Karzai and the U.S. have sought peace talks with the Taliban and other insurgent factions in preparation for most foreign troops leaving next year after more than 12 years of war, but the efforts have borne little fruit. The Taliban seek to re-establish the strict interpretation of Islamic law they imposed for five years before being ousted in the 2001 U.S.-led invasion over its sheltering of al-Qaida's terrorist leadership.

The insurgents last month launched a fierce new spring offensive that has in the past week alone seen the police chief of Farah province gunned down outside his home and twin bombings that killed nine people in an elite gated community for government officials and business owners outside of the southern city of Kandahar. Two bombs also exploded outside the provincial governor's office in Nangarhar province last week, killing one police guard.

Insurgents have also targeted members of the international coalition. A roadside bomb killed four American soldiers last week in the country's south, while another insurgent faction, Hizb-e-Islami, targeted a coalition convoy in the capital of Kabul two days later, killing two U.S. soldiers and four American contractors who were training Afghan troops to take over security.

Kinks and curves at the nanoscale

Monday, May 20, 2013

One of the basic principles of nanotechnology is that when you make things extremely small?one nanometer is about five atoms wide, 100,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair?they are going to become more perfect.

"Perfect in the sense that their arrangement of atoms in the real world will become more like an idealized model," says University of Vermont engineer Frederic Sansoz, "with smaller crystals?in for example, gold or copper?it's easier to have fewer defects in them."

And eliminating the defects at the interface separating two crystals, or grains, has been shown by nanotechnology experts to be a powerful strategy for making materials stronger, more easily molded, and less electrically resistant?or a host of other qualities sought by designers and manufacturers.

Since 2004, when a seminal paper came out in Science, materials scientists have been excited about one special of arrangement of atoms in metals and other materials called a "coherent twin boundary" or CTB.

Based on theory and experiment, these coherent twin boundaries are often described as "perfect," appearing like a perfectly flat, one-atom-thick plane in computer models and electron microscope images.

Over the last decade, a body of literature has shown these coherent twin boundaries?found at the nanoscale within the crystalline structure of common metals like gold, silver and copper?are highly effective at making materials much stronger while maintaining their ability to undergo permanent change in shape without breaking and still allowing easy transmission of electrons?an important fact for computer manufacturing and other electronics applications.

But new research now shows that coherent twin boundaries are not so perfect after all.

A team of scientists, including Sansoz, a professor in UVM's College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, and colleagues from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and elsewhere, write in the May 19 edition of Nature Materials that coherent twin boundaries found in copper "are inherently defective."

With a high-resolution electron microscope, using a more powerful technique than has ever been used to examine these boundaries, they found tiny kink-like steps and curvatures in what had previously been observed as perfect.

Even more surprising, these kinks and other defects appear to be the cause of the coherent twin boundary's strength and other desirable qualities.

"Everything we have learned on these materials in the past 10 years will have to be revisited with this new information," Sansoz says

The experiment, led by Morris Wang at the Lawrence Livermore Lab, applied a newly developed mapping technique to study the crystal orientation of CTBs in so-called nanotwinned copper and "boom?it revealed these defects," says Sansoz.

This real-world discovery conformed to earlier intriguing theoretical findings that Sansoz had been making with "atomistic simulations" on a computer. The lab results sent Sansoz back to his computer models where he introduced the newly discovered "kink" defects into his calculations. Using UVM's Vermont Advanced Computing Center, he theoretically confirmed that the kink defects observed by the Livermore team lead to "rather rich deformation processes at the atomic scale," he says, that do not exist with perfect twin boundaries.

With the computer model, "we found a series of completely new mechanisms," he says, for explaining why coherent twin boundaries simultaneously add strength and yet also allow stretching (what scientists call "tensile ductility")? properties that are usually mutually exclusive in conventional materials.

"We had no idea such defects existed," says Sansoz. "So much for the perfect twin boundary. We now call them defective twin boundaries."

For several decades, scientists have looked for ways to shrink the size of individual crystalline grains within metals and other materials. Like a series of dykes or walls within the larger structure, the boundaries between grains can slow internal slip and help resist failure. Generally, the more of these boundaries?the stronger the material.

Originally, scientists believed that coherent twin boundaries in materials were much more reliable and stable than conventional grain boundaries, which are incoherently full of defects. But the new research shows they could both contain similar types of defects despite very different boundary energies.

"Understanding these defective structures is the first step to take full use of these CTBs for strengthening and maintaining the ductility and electrical conductivity of many materials," Morris Wang said. "To understand the behavior and mechanisms of these defects will help our engineering design of these materials for high-strength applications."

For Sansoz, this discovery underlines a deep principle, "There are all manner of defects in nature," he says, "with nanotech, you are trying to control the way they are formed and dispersed in matter, and to understand their impact on properties. The point of this paper is that some defects make a material stronger."

Roll off his back

AnsahAP

At a time when the NFL wants to get more people from other countries interested in pro football, the best strategy could be getting more people from other countries playing pro football.

As recently explained by Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com, the NFL has seen a gradual increase in the addition of foreign players, with 10 players born outside the U.S. drafted last month.? Five of them, including fifth overall pick Ziggy Ansah, were picked in the first two rounds.

Since all played college football in the U.S., it means the NFL found these players in the traditional way.? At some point, the NFL could be at the front lines of searching for players beyond our borders.

?We may be at the tip of the iceberg with this,? Falcons G.M. Thomas Dimitroff told Marvez.? ?Some very talented athletes from other countries as they learn our game and nuances will begin to excel more than others have in the past.

?I think we?ve become a lot more open-minded to the fact we will invite players outside of our country where there was once a stigma attached about not having a true understanding of football.? We now say that while they may not have a true understanding yet, the potential athleticism and phenotype suggest there?s some serious upside.?

The goal becomes finding large men who can do what NFL players need to do, and then teaching them how to do it.? ?There are big, fast, strong athletes with upside to grow into NFL players,? Dimitroff said.? ?These guys may someday be coming in waves.?

Of course, getting more people in other countries interested in football will result in more NFL body types finding the game, instead of the game having to find them.? As more foreign players make their way to America, more will become aware of the path.? Also, as more NFL football is played in places other than America, more will become aware of the game.

One major step in that direction would be the recognition of football by the International Olympic Committee.? Per Marvez, a ruling on the International Federation of American Football?s pending application is expected by June.? Eventually, a seven-on-seven version of football could become the global version of the game.

Whether it?s seven or 11 or any other number, the more exposure the game with the uniquely shaped ball gets in other countries, the more potential NFL players can be found from other places.

Of course, those who balk at the NFL taking ?our? game to other countries will surely complain about players from other countries taking NFL jobs.? But the obsession with winning will take coaches and General Managers anywhere for potential players, proving once again that a system based exclusively on merit is the best way to ensure diversity and inclusion.

It is the most populous metropolis in India, and the fourth most populous city in the world. This mega city was once a small fishing hamlet and now it is one of Asias sprawling metropolises. Mumbai has seen the ebb and flow of events that has defined and is redefining its character. Home to over 20 million people, the maximum city has the capacity to overload a persons senses with its sights and sounds.
Ranchi is the capital of Jharkhand, the 46th largest city in India and third largest city in Jharkhand State. It was the centre of the Jharkhand movement for a separate state. Home to the Oraon tribe in the ancient times, Ranchi has a rich history dating back to the times of Mahabharata. Today, Ranchi is fast developing metropolis. Ranchi is known as the "City of Waterfalls", due to numerous waterfalls around the vicinity of the city. There has been an increase in air tickets booking to Ranchi as it is developing at a great pace and is opening up for business.
The distance between the two cities is over 1700kms. Few major airlines like Jet Airways, Go Air and Air India operate from New Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai to Ranchi flights. It is advisable that air tickets booking is done well in advance to get cheap air fares. There are both direct flights and one-stop flights from various cities in India to Ranchi. Mumbai to Ranchi flights take an hour and fifteen minutes to complete the journey by air.
Mumbai to Ranchi flights are usually full as it is the next big gateway to the east and is emerging as a big hub for major airlines that operate flights to the north east of India. The burden on Kolkata airport has reduced. Many airlines halt in Ranchi and then proceed to other cities in the north east. This has resulted in air tickets booking on this sector are completed fast and tickets are sold out quickly.
Mumbai to Ranchi flights start in the morning. This is convenient for business travelers. Air travel, though might be expensive than train travel, it is more convenient in terms of saving time. The competition among domestic airlines is to the benefit of the traveler since attractive airfares are now available. Also the distance is long and many travelers opt for flying and air tickets booking on this sector have risen considerably.

CANNES, France (AP) ? Little could lessen the fever-pitched excitement for "Hunger Games: Catching Fire," but heavy rain nevertheless dampened the film's lavish Cannes party.

Stars of the "Hunger Games" sequel, Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Sam Clafin, arrived Saturday at the Cannes Film Festival. "Catching Fire," perhaps more than any other film not actually screening at Cannes, is seeking to use the festival's global platform to promote the highly anticipated sequel.

Digital flame billboards have constantly burned by the Majestic Barriere hotel. The cast posed for photographers Saturday. And in the evening, Lionsgate held a lavish soiree beside the beach on the Croisette, complete with flowing liquid chocolate and parading models dressed in the film's ornate costumes.

But a planned stunt at the party to promote the film was scuttled due to the poor weather that has plagued the first five days of the French Riviera festival. Lawrence made an enthusiastic appearance, but later fled, grimacing ? like other guests ? at the cold raindrops.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" will be released in late November.

Red Wings beat Blackhawks 4-1, even series

CHICAGO (AP) ? In case they weren't aware already, the Chicago Blackhawks now know they're going to have to earn it if they want to get past Detroit.

The Red Wings hammered home that message on Saturday.

Damien Brunner and Brendan Smith scored in the second period and Detroit beat the Blackhawks 4-1 in Game 2 to even their Western Conference semifinal series.

It was a strong response by the Red Wings after Chicago handled them easily in the series opener, 4-1.

"We've got a real good club now," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. "And we haven't been good all year. We've just gotten better."

Their confidence got a big jolt after they knocked off the Presidents' Trophy winners and avoided falling into a deep hole. It was another big win by a team that finished seventh in the conference, only to knock off second-seeded Anaheim in the first round.

Now, they're even with a team that's been rolling along all season and is eyeing its second Stanley Cup in four years.

"Both teams would be stupid if they thought they were going to come in here and either team win four straight," Chicago's Brent Seabrook said.

Just as the Blackhawks did in Game 1, Detroit took control in the second period and put the game away in the third. Now, the Red Wings have a chance to take the lead when this series between Original Six rivals shifts to Detroit for Game 3 on Monday.

"Overall, I think we had more energy," the Red Wings' Henrik Zetterberg said. "We did a lot of the little things better than we did in Game 1 and when we got our chances we were able to put the puck in the net."

Patrick Kane gave Chicago a 1-0 lead late in the first, but did things ever change after that.

Brunner tied it when he deflected a wrist shot by Jakub Kindl early in the second, and Smith gave the Red Wings the lead when he scored off a feed from Zetterberg on a 3-on-1 late in the second.

Johan Franzen made it 3-1 in the third when he fired a rising shot past Crawford after a perfect pass from Jonathan Ericsson in the Detroit zone. And Valtteri Filppula closed out the scoring with 7:57 left in the game.

That was enough for Jimmy Howard, who stopped 19 shots.

Crawford made 26 saves for Chicago and played well at times even though things got out of hand down the stretch. When it was over, coach Joel Quenneville insisted his faith in his goalie hasn't wavered.

"Not at all," he said. "Across the board, we should all assume responsibility."

The Red Wings were simply a step faster and were more physical in this one after the Blackhawks ran away from them in the opener.

"I think just by taking care of our own end first, making good plays, you end up playing a faster game that way," Smith said. "By taking away their speed, it helps out ours. You want to get a lot of contact on these types of teams, and it works out for us."

The Blackhawks still struck first thanks to a lucky bounce after Detroit's Kyle Quincey sprawled out to block a pass across the slot by Patrick Sharp that was intended for Kane on a 2-on-1 rush. The puck bounced to a trailing Michal Handzus, who immediately fed it to a wide open Kane in the right slot. He fired it into the net at the 14:05 mark for a 1-0 lead and his first goal of the playoffs.

About a minute later, with the Red Wings on a power play, Crawford made a nice save on Zetterberg before Pavel Datsyuk ripped a shot high off the right post.

Detroit tied it early in the second when a wrist shot by Kindl from just inside the blue line deflected off Brunner and past a screened Crawford, who didn't even react as the puck went past him on the glove side.

But Chicago's goalie had the fans chanting his name midway through the period with two great saves, stopping Zetterberg from the slot and sprawling out to foil Daniel Cleary on the rebound.

The Red Wings took a 2-1 lead with 3:52 left in the second after Chicago's Niklas Hjalmarsson fell racing Zetterberg for a loose puck. Zetterberg then dished to Smith on a 2-on-1 rush for the go-ahead goal.

"He creates a lot of stuff, sometimes for both teams," Zetterberg said in a nod to Smith's struggles in Game 1.

There weren't many mistakes by the Red Wings in this one. Other than Kane's goal, they contained the Blackhawks' stars and made it look easy over the final two periods.

"They kind of used our own style against us as far as holding onto the puck and keeping it away from us," Kane said.

NOTES: LW Drew Miller was in the Red Wings' lineup for the first time since April 20. He had been sidelined by a broken bone in his right hand. ... F Viktor Stalberg was a healthy scratch for the Blackhawks, just as he was in Game 1. "I don't like changing too much, but we wanted to get (Dave Bolland) in our lineup," Quenneville said before the game. "It's comparable to what we've done during season. But we'll see. We can adapt and change at any moment." ... Quenneville on the early start: "I think the guys, once they get in, they don't mind playing in the afternoon."

'American Idol' finale draws record low ratings

NEW YORK (AP) ? Ratings for the "American Idol" finale plunged to a record low for the 12-year-old show.

According to Nielsen Co. figures Friday, Candice Glover's victory over Kree Harrison was watched by 14.3 million viewers. That's a 33 percent drop from the year before, when 21.5 million viewers saw Phillip Phillips claim the "Idol" crown. That represented the show's previous record low finale audience.

"American Idol" saw an even steeper 44 percent drop among advertiser-coveted young adults for Thursday's finale.

The lack of interest in the winner of this year's contest parallels the show's declining ratings for the season. Fox is scrambling to revive the singing contest that once dominated TV, revamping the judges' panel and making yet-to-be detailed format changes.

Original judge Randy Jackson has already announced his exit.

Big Data Analytics Specialist Tableau Software Raises $254M In IPO, Shares Pop 58%; Marketo Up 65% To $21.48

Screen Shot 2013-05-17 at 15.23.04One year to the day of the troubled Facebook IPO, the climate for tech IPOs in the public markets is significantly less stormy, especially for companies in the enterprise space. Today, not one but two, Tableau Software and Marketo, are debuting on New York stock exchanges. Business intelligence provider Tableau Software, trading as "DATA", is one of the more highly anticipated tech IPOs of the year, and so far it has not disappointed. It priced its IPO at $31 per share, and it has popped 58%?and is at nearly $49/share in early trading on the NYSE.

MONTREAL - Less than a week after Chris Hadfield and company ended their five- month sojourn in space by touching down safely on their home planet, the members of the Starship Enterprise are setting out on another tour of duty.

Picking up where the rebooted franchise left off in 2009, Star Trek Into Darkness is an action and quip-fuelled 3D barrage that has more to do with modern blockbuster entertainment norms than the cerebral dilemmas of Capt. James T. Kirk and his crew in the original TV series.

That's clear from the spectacular, albeit ? like much of this film ? overly digitized chase sequence that opens the proceedings. Think Indiana Jones and spear-throwing natives and you're beginning to get the picture. It's not the first and won't be the last time in his career that director J.J. Abrams pays homage to hero Steven Spielberg.

After saving a faraway planet and breaking all the rules in the process, the Enterprise is grounded, young Kirk (Chris Pine) demoted, and he and Spock (Zachary Quinto) separated. This can't last, obviously ? we have a movie to watch.

A terrorist attack throws the world into chaos, and before long, Kirk and Spock are reunited in interplanetary pursuit of dastardly bad guy Commander John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch, a.k.a. Sherlock Holmes for BBC viewers).

He's holed up on the abandoned Klingon home world of Kronos. Things get tense when Harrison is taken prisoner aboard the Enterprise. And that's about all we'll say about plot. Not that plot has much to do with anything here. There is one, but it's all over the place, much like the near-constant barrage of activity interspersed with in-jokes about characters we know all too well.

The mischievous fun of Abrams's 2009 Star Trek hinged on gently mocking the self-seriousness of a stale franchise. That jocular tone has become the default setting in this hyperactive followup. Wisecracks regarding Spock's extreme logic are a dime a dozen, while Kirk's hot head, McCoy's (Karl Urban) earnestness, Chekhov's (Anton Yelchin) franticness and Scotty's (Simon Pegg) colourful Scottish vernacular are thrown in free of charge.

Pegg earns himself increased screen time with a characteristically enthusiastic performance. But the women get short shrift: Zoe Saldana returns as communications officer, and Spock's frustrated love interest, Uhura; and Alice Eve is newcomer Dr. Carol Marcus (whom in Star Trek lore bears a child with Kirk); and that's about it ? this is a guy's movie.

The real revelation is Cumberbatch, who steals the show as the film's alluring yet evil antagonist. His true identity, revealed in the homestretch, will be a treat (and provide fodder for spirited debate) to hardcore Trekkies.

Abrams wraps things up in open-ended fashion, leaving the door (and galaxy) wide open for further adventures of the Enterprise. Hopefully, the next instalment will see this new "next generation" match the director's ever-reliable entertainment value with a bit more substance.

Muddah, faddah! Not everyone loved summer sleepaway camp

For some, summer camp played out much like Allan Sherman's 1963 hit, "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh." It was awful. With nearly 9 million kids set to take off for their own summer sleepaway camp, what do those who loathed every minute have to say??

By Staff,?Associated Press / May 17, 2013

This May 15, 2013 photo shows Lauren Russ in Chicago, posing with letters that she wrote home as a child from sleepaway camp begging her parents to come and get her. While many children enjoy attending overnight camp, Russ is one of a number of adults who look back on the experience with less-than-fond memories of feeling homesick and lonely.

When the school year ends a few weeks from now, millions of kids will head off to sleepaway camp for a summer filled with color wars, kayaking and bunk life. Most will have a great time, some will make friends for life, and many will look back on the experience fondly.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

But amid these happy campers is another group of veterans who recall sleepaway camp quite differently. These were the kids who cried every day and sent letters home begging to be picked up. They were lonesome, miserable, bullied; hated the bugs, hated the pool. Many refused to ever go back, and decades later, they can recall their suffering in visceral detail ? from poison ivy to wretched food.

"Oh did I hate overnight camp," recalled Lauren Russ, 43, who lives in Chicago. "I cried every day and wrote two letters home a day asking my parents to come get me."

Russ' mom and dad saved those notes and even read some of them aloud at her wedding shower 10 years ago. "I got another letter from you," reads one of the heart-wrenching lines in Russ' schoolgirl's script. "Every time I get a letter I cry and become very homesick."

What was so bad about camp? Let Russ count the ways: "I'll never forget the first night I had to sleep in a tent. I hated the public showers, I hated sharing a room with several other girls, I hated the anxiety of packing and saying goodbye."

For Kelsey Tomascheski, 48, of Santa Clara, Calif., camp memories center on bad food. "I will admit that I was a picky eater, but the problem was more on quality," said Tomascheski. "I could only handle so many bland spaghetti feeds, too-salty chicken strips, and soggy fries. Usually halfway through the week I gave up and only ate PB&J at all three meals."

Some unhappy campers hated bunk life. "It was dirty," recalled Gerry Cotten, 25, a website developer in Toronto. "I was always into computers, and some sort of computer camp probably would have been fun, but sleeping in an ancient old wooden cabin, with disgusting washrooms a five-minute walk away, wasn't really appealing."

The great outdoors didn't hold much charm either: "Taking a dip in the lake each morning instead of having a shower wasn't really for me. They called it the Polar Dip."

According to the American Camp Association, nearly 9 million kids under the age of 18 attend one of the country's 7,000 overnight camps each summer, with stays ranging from a week to two months. Research on the association's website suggests that going to camp can build confidence, self-esteem, social skills, independence and a sense of adventure.

But for some campers, the experience was more like the funny 1963 hit song performed by Allan Sherman: "Hello Muddah, hello Fadduh, here I am at Camp Granada. Camp is very entertaining. And they say we'll have some fun if it stops raining."

Kim Cooper, 46, hated the structured activities. "They said 'You need to go make lanyards now,'" she recalled. "Why do I need a lanyard?" She preferred "hiking solo in the woods looking for interesting wildlife." But other campers thought that was weird, and Cooper soon found herself "surrounded by a group of scary big kids who were shoving me around and calling me Moses" ? because of a stick she carried on her treks.
