Apple iPhone '5S' or '6' Rumors: 5 New Features You're Likely To See On Its Release Date In 2013

Apple reportedly has three different phones in development, but people ultimately want to know about the true successor to the iPhone 5. What could Apple's next-generation high-end smartphone look like, feel like or do?

In just the first month of 2013, we've heard dozens of varying reports about this next-gen iPhone -- unofficially labeled as "iPhone 5S," or "iPhone 6" -- speculating on its various features, and how it could truly differentiate itself from all previous iPhones.

We've rounded up some of the most likely iPhone 5S or 6 features, and while everything on this list must be deemed a "rumor" -- Apple refuses to comment on speculation about its future products -- many of the features on this list do have backing from analysts with excellent track records and sources from within Apple's supply chain.

Without further ado, here's what we've heard:

1. Improved Rear Camera: Last week, iLounge editor-in-chief Jeremy Horwitz released a series of reports on the next-gen iPhone, which he calls "iPhone 5S." In addition to a processor bump (an all-new A7 system-on-a-chip), Horwitz believes the next iPhone will feature a better camera system.

?The iPhone 5S is still months away from mass production, but our source suspects that the star feature will be an upgraded rear camera -- perhaps featuring Sony?s 13-Megapixel sensor, plus the aforementioned flash upgrade,? Horwitz said. ?Current prototypes are codenamed N51 and N53, with July mentioned as the target date.?

Giving credence to these rumors, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo -- one of the best at the business at predicting Apple?s product pipeline -- also believes the iPhone 5S or 6 will feature a new-and-improved camera system, including f2.0 aperture on the rear side and a "smart LED flash" for enhanced photo-taking.

2. Fingerprint Sensor: While a sharper camera is all fine and dandy, one particularly strong rumor we've heard is that the iPhone 5S or 6 will finally show some love for the home button, which is said to include an?integrated fingerprint sensor?to replace the need for usernames and passwords on the phone.

A fingerprint sensor makes great logical sense to be an iPhone 6 feature: Unlike other rival smartphones with multiple buttons the bottom, the iPhone has only one mechanical button on its face, which makes it exceedingly easy and intuitive for users to find and use this feature. Furthermore, given Apple?s urgency to acquire Florida-based AuthenTec last July (as noted in the?company?s own filing?to the SEC), there?s an excellent chance that we?ll see this unique feature in the iPhone 5S or 6 when it releases later this year.

3. The Photographer's Timer: Traditionally, self-timing cameras are used to take pictures of a big group, or a self-portrait. But in Apple's self-timer, a patent?granted March 8, the iDevice's camera can identify the photographer and ask if they want to be in the picture. At that point, the iPhone will simply wait until it detects the photographer's face in the viewfinder before it automatically snaps a photo. If you are the "photographer" who also wants to be in the picture, the iPhone will simply wait until it detects your face to take the picture.

"But what about interruptions? What happens if I get a call after I set the self-timer?" Wonder no more. If you set the timer and then your phone goes off, the timer will still wait until it has detected, recognized and verified that you are the photographer and that you're in place for the photo.

If anyone can pull off this kind of intelligent face recognition in photo-taking, it's Apple: the company purchased Polar Rose, a Swedish software firm that specializes in facial recognition, back in September 2010.

4. 3D Photography: As more and more people are relying on their smartphone as their camera, Apple might be the first major phone maker to release a phone that can take 3D photographs.

While existing 3D cameras and video recorders gather three-dimensional information from objects, they're generally incapable of getting detailed enough information in relation to the shapes, surfaces and depth of the objects.?Apple's patented solution?involves a series of systems, tools and methods to capture a 3D image by using multiple sensors and cameras. One sensor would capture a polarizing image, while two other sensors would capture two different non-polarizing images, and Apple's system would combine the images into a composite. If Apple is putting a great deal of focus into the camera, it's possible Apple might throw in a couple of extra sensors on the rear side to pull off unique three-dimensional photographs.

5. IGZO Display: Apple has reportedly invested a great deal of time, energy and money into display technology, likely to be used for its next-gen iPad and iPhone, including this year's iPhone 5S or 6.

A?Jan. 3 report?released by the China Times said Apple might switch to a "Touch On Display" panel currently in development at Taiwan-based Innolux Corp., which has?reportedly been licensed?to use Sharp's proprietary IGZO display technology.

Whether or not Apple chooses Innolux to make the next iPhone's screens, however, Apple is most likely going to feature Sharp's ultra-thin IGZO display technology in its next iPhone.

In late December,?DigiTimes?and Apple analyst?Horace Dediu?both mentioned Apple?s alleged investment in the ultra-thin IGZO displays produced by Sharp, predicting the inclusion of the technology in Apple?s next batch of iOS devices, including iPhones and iPads. Dediu also pointed to Apple?s recent $2.3 billion investment in ?product tooling, manufacturing process equipment and infrastructure,? believing the cash was used to help bail out Sharp, which had been in financial straits in 2012. Sharp is reportedly going ?all in? on IGZO technology, so it?s possible Apple saved Sharp to leverage its investment in the next generation of displays.

IGZO display technology is not only thin and tough, but it can even handle higher screen densities than Apple?s Retina display, which is visually stunning on its own. IGZO displays can reportedly handle display densities north of 330 ppi; for a quick comparison, the new iPad 4 can only achieve 264 ppi.

One of the advantages of IGZO display technology is its lower power consumption. Most Apple products, from the iPhone 5 to the iPad 4, require cartoonishly big batteries to achieve just eight hours of power -- this is because current-gen Retina displays are extremely power hungry. If Apple wanted its iPhone 6 to not only last longer during the day but also charge faster when plugged in, IGZO seems to be the way to go for the next generation of iOS devices.

What features do you think Apple should include in the iPhone 5S or 6? Let us know in the comments section at the bottom of the page.

Epilepsy Drug in Pregnancy Linked to Autism Risk in Study - Health ...

46044 Epilepsy Drug in Pregnancy Linked to Autism Risk in Study

By Steven Reinberg
HealthDay Reporter

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 30 (HealthDay News) ? Women taking the epilepsy drug valproate (Depakote) while pregnant are at increased risk of having children with autism and other developmental problems, according to a small British study.

Valproate is prescribed for epilepsy as well as certain psychiatric disorders and migraines. Other studies have shown its use during pregnancy is associated with birth defects and, more recently, lower IQ in school-age children.

The American Academy of Neurology advises against valproate use during pregnancy, and some experts believe it should not be used by women of childbearing age.

?Women for whom valproate is a treatment option should discuss the risks and benefits of this drug with their doctor prior to pregnancy, to ensure that their health and that of the potential child is optimized,? said Rebecca Bromley, a clinical psychologist and research associate at the University of Liverpool, who led the new study.

?Planning a pregnancy in collaboration with your doctor is important if you are taking antiepileptic drugs,? she added. And evidence suggests the damage to the fetus occurs early in pregnancy, according to the study.

But women should not alter their medication without talking to their doctor, she noted.

For the study, published online Jan. 30 in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry, Bromley?s team collected data on more than 500 pregnant women between 2000 and 2004. About half had epilepsy, of whom all but 34 took medicine to control their seizures.

The drugs they took included carbamazepine (Tegretol), valproate and lamotrigine (Lamictal), the researchers noted.

Of the 415 children for whom data was available, 19 were diagnosed with a developmental problem by age 6 years. Three of them also had a physical handicap.

Twelve of these children had an autism spectrum disorder, and one was also diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the researchers found.

Three children had ADHD alone and four had dyspraxia, a condition causing poor physical coordination and clumsiness.

These neurodevelopmental problems were far more common among children whose mothers had epilepsy (7.46 percent) compared with those whose mothers didn?t have the seizure disorder (1.87 percent). And they were detected more often among children whose mothers took valproate by itself or in combination with other drugs, the study authors found.

Twelve percent of the children of mothers who took valproate alone had developmental problems as did 15 percent of those whose mothers took valproate along with other medications, the researchers reported.

Also, the likelihood of a neurodevelopmental disorder appeared to increase with higher doses of valproate, they noted.

Overall, children exposed to valproate alone or with other drugs were six times and 10 times more likely to be diagnosed with a developmental problem, respectively, compared with children of mothers who did not have epilepsy, the study authors said.

In addition, boys were three times more likely to be diagnosed with a developmental disorder than girls.

Children with autism have trouble with communication and social interactions, and its incidence is increasing.

Bromley said she hopes to continue the research in larger studies.

Meanwhile, children exposed to valproate in the womb should be monitored, the authors said. However, ?it is important to stress that not every child is affected,? Bromley said.

?Exposure to the drug is associated with an increase in the level of risk, but we do not yet understand the mechanism behind the association,? she added.

Other experts said that valproate is overused.

?There is still a lot of valproate being used in women of childbearing age, probably more than we should be using,? said Dr. Kimford Meador, a professor of neurology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.

Valproate is known to increase the risk of birth defects in higher doses, Meador said. ?It is the antiepileptic drug that has the most risk for developmental disorders,? he added.

?We have a lot of alternate drugs that can be tried,? he said.

Only half of the prescriptions for valproate in the United States are for epilepsy; the rest are for psychiatric disorders and migraines, he noted.

Dr. Orrin Devinsky, director of the epilepsy center at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City, agreed that valproate use should be limited.

?The increased risk of poor neurodevelopmental outcomes, including autism, must be viewed in light of the similarly increased risk of major congenital malformations,? Devinsky said.

Together, he added, these risks ?should make every doctor treating a woman of childbearing age with valproate make sure it is truly essential.?

Study shows how brain cells shape temperature preferences

Wednesday, January 30, 2013

While the wooly musk ox may like it cold, fruit flies definitely do not. They like it hot, or at least warm. In fact, their preferred optimum temperature is very similar to that of humans?76 degrees F.

Scientists have known that a type of brain cell circuit helps regulate a variety of innate and learned behavior in animals, including their temperature preferences. What has been a mystery is whether or not this behavior stems from a specific set of neurons (brain cells) or overlapping sets.

Now, a new study from The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) shows that a complex set of overlapping neuronal circuits works in concert to drive temperature preferences in the fruit fly Drosophila by affecting a single target, a heavy bundle of neurons within the fly brain known as the mushroom body. These nerve bundles, which get their name from their bulbous shape, play critical roles in learning and memory.

The study, published in the January 30, 2013 edition of the Journal of Neuroscience, shows that dopaminergic circuits?brain cells that synthesize dopamine, a common neurotransmitter?within the mushroom body do not encode a single signal, but rather perform a more complex computation of environmental conditions.

"We found that dopamine neurons process multiple inputs to generate multiple outputs?the same set of nerves process sensory information and reward-avoidance learning," said TSRI Assistant Professor Seth Tomchik. "This discovery helps lay the groundwork to better understand how information is processed in the brain. A similar set of neurons is involved in behavior preferences in humans?from basic rewards to more complex learning and memory."

Using imaging techniques that allow scientists to visualize neuron activity in real time, the study illuminated the response of dopaminergic neurons to changes in temperature. The behavioral roles were then examined by silencing various subsets of these neurons. Flies were tested using a temperature gradient plate; the flies moved from one place to another to express their temperature preferences.

As it turns out, genetic silencing of dopaminergic neurons innervating the mushroom body substantially reduces cold avoidance behavior. "If you give the fly a choice, it will pick San Diego weather every time," Tomchik said, "but if you shut down those nerves, they suddenly don't mind being in Minnesota."

The study also showed dopaminergic neurons respond to cooling with sudden a burst of activity at the onset of a drop in temperature, before settling down to a lower steady-state level. This initial burst of dopamine could function to increase neuronal plasticity?the ability to adapt?during periods of environmental change when the organism needs to acquire new associative memories or update previous associations with temperature changes.

U.S. Oil Gushing, Oil Stocks Getting Ready to Move

Wednesday, January 30th, 2013
By Mitchell Clark, B.Comm. for Profit Confidential

Oil Stocks Getting Ready to MoveThe stock market?s recent breakout has legs, and there?s more optimism for the economy and corporate earnings this year. The stock market had a very strong start to the year, with the Dow Jones Industrials leading the way. Transportation stocks have turned strong, and the NASDAQ Composite is moving solidly. Even the price of oil is slowly ticking higher?$100.00 oil is a near-term reality.

There is a renaissance taking place in the domestic U.S. oil and gas business, and there is a ton of money sloshing around in the system. Countless companies are drilling in Montana, North Dakota, and California, along with the traditional regions. There is a glut of natural gas on the market, and low prices are supplanting coal for electricity production. It won?t be long before the U.S. is actually energy independent, especially if natural gas is used in more applications (as T. Boone Pickens advocates). Plus, there?s a lot of oil and gas drilling going on outside of the U.S. market, and the big oil and gas services companies just reported great financial results.

On the stock market, resource investing is always cyclical. Even the fastest growth story (say, an oil producer with new discoveries and a verifiable production forecast) won?t move upward on the stock market without a commensurate move in oil prices. An oil producer not only has to find the commodity and get it to market; it also has to worry about the prices for that commodity, which are set by a marketplace beyond its control. It?s a different business from speculating among technology stocks, for example.

That being said, however, if oil prices are rising, and there?s a good growth story out there, the stock market will reward that story with particular fervor. Because the commodity is so much a part of our daily lives, oil stocks, especially, move on the stock market with greater strength over other resource stocks.

There are a lot of new growth stories in the oil business these days. One smaller producer with seemingly good prospects is Northern Oil and Gas, Inc. (NYSE/NOG), which is a Minnesota company drilling and producing in the Bakken and Three Forks formations in the Williston Basin in North Dakota and Montana. This is one of many newly popular oil regions in the U.S.

In 2012, the company?s total revenues were about $300 million. In 2011, they were $160 million; in 2010, they were $60.0 million; and in 2009, they were $15.0 million. This is, for sure, a growth story; but on the stock market, the position was down for almost all of 2012. The reason, of course, was flat oil prices.

So, here is the key: when oil prices turn higher, there will be a lot of stock market strength from this group. Timing, of course, is everything. I think we?re very close to a breakout in oil prices. Natural gas is another story. But the U.S. economy should grow between two percent and four percent this year, and if the current momentum sustains itself (and policymakers don?t create more uncertainty), then gross domestic product (GDP) growth is going to put pressure on oil prices. (See ?My Near-Term Outlook for the Stock Market as We Start 2013.?)

Right now, I?d be perusing growth stories in the oil business on the stock market. Strength in large-cap oil companies is self-evident. Many of the big names are trading right around their all-time highs. China is also a player in this story, and the economic news from that country is turning positive. The U.S. oil business is experiencing renewed enthusiasm. There are going to be more jobs in this industry over the next several years.

How to Home School Your Child | Reference & Education Skypnosis

How to Home School Your ChildFor living, the American didactic regularity has been scrutinized, berated, belittled, and criticized when it comes to the learning of Americas offspring. For several families, secretive schools, as classy, are a tuition-guaranteed, well-rounded learning. Charter schools, which are privately operated civic schools formal by the stately departments of civic directive, are an unorthodox as positively. A upward typeface of learning, residence education, is appropriate constantly increasingly prevalent. In studies conducted by the Us. District of Learning, in 2003 present were approximately 1.1 million students who were residence- schooled. According to a prepare in black and white by the Us. District of Learning, the delineation of residence schooled encompassed students whose parents reported them as being schooled at residence as a replacement for of at a civic or secretive train for at smallest amount quantity of their learning and if their part-time staffing in civic or secretive schools did not exceed 25 hours a week. Students who were schooled at residence simply as of a acting illness were not built-in as residence schoolers.

In adding to the figures on the total of students enrolled, the Us. Dept. of Learning besides surveyed folks parents who residence schooled their offspring to hit upon the work out why parents chose this didactic choice. The work out agreed the majority habitually (by 31% of parents surveyed) was that parents were alarmed not far off from the structure of the train populace. A further maximum work out parents chose to residence train their offspring was to offer spiritual or decent directive, which they would not pick up in a civic train. Officials examine rules for investing in education in neighbouring ...

Education

Chularat Saengpassa,
Wannapa Khaopa
The Nation January 28, 2013 1:00 am

Officials are preparing Thailand for investment in education among Asean Economic Community (AEC) countries and to be an international hub in the region when the community is launched in 2015.

Office of the Private Education Commission (OPEC) acting secretary-general Chanwit Tubsuphan told The Nation of the plans in an interview last week.

He said the officials were studying regulations and conditions for educational investment in Asean countries to prepare Thailand's involvement under agreements with AEC members.

The demand for international education and English programmes (EP) has been increasing unceasingly and was expected to continue growing, especially when AEC comes into effect and brings a free market to the region. OPEC will study these plans to see limitations and opportunities in educational investment for investors.

"Each country in Asean has regulations and conditions for educational investment. For example, some countries may not allow foreigners to provide basic education in their countries. We're studying this and its effect on people, culture and perspectives before Thailand makes a decision on how much it would be open for foreign investors to invest in the country's education," Chanwit said.

There are 133 international schools in Thailand. The amount has grown from about 40 in 1992. There are 40,000-50,000 students at those schools at present, said Usa Somboon, president of International Schools Association of Thailand (ISAT) in a separate interview.

Also, global international education has increased dramatically and will keep growing. The total number of English-medium international schools in the world is more than 6,400 with more than 3.2 million students. By 2022, it is expected that there will be 11,300 international schools and 6.2 million students, according to ISC Research, part of the International School Consultancy Group and Usa.

According to Chanwit, the number of private schools with EP increased from 144 in 2008 to 162 in 2012, while the number of EP students rose from 35,800 in 2008 to 54,800 in 2012. In all, 400 state and private schools across the country are offering EP and Mini-EP to hundreds of thousands of students. Ten per cent of them are foreigners.

"We expect that more students from Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia and Vietnam will come to Thailand to study at our international and EP schools after AEC takes effect. Apart from children of expats from Western countries, many foreign students in such schools are from those countries," he said.

Usa said: "Our country is ready to be an international school hub for the region. I would like the government to sincerely support international education in Thailand in terms of strategic planning. We've been asking many times about having an independent entity or agency to support international education in Thailand and that it acts like a centre of information for international schools in Thailand and helps develop strategically how to promote and compete in a growing global society."

"We are the leader in international education in Asean. If our resources are developed and supported in the right way and right time, we will be able to expand within the country and in the Asean region," said Wirach Amonpattana, vice-president and treasurer of ISAT.

Also, Usa and Wirach voiced the association's desire for empowerment of international schools. It would like educational agencies to change some regulations about Thai language and culture training for foreign teachers that were considered major obstacles for them in obtaining a teacher's licence in Thailand. They said they wanted the government to allow international schools to independently manage their own executive board members.

Chanwit said as OPEC supervised international schools and he was a board member of the Teachers' Council of Thailand, he would propose the council allow ISAT and universities to provide training for foreign teachers in different parts of the country. It would then be more convenient for them and would also adjust assessment methods that were more suitable for foreign teachers.

"OPEC is considering the proportion of foreign and Thai people who are appointed to international schools' executive boards. At present, at least half of the board members must be Thai. OPEC will check if the laws need to be changed following agreements in AEC," he said.

Although government agencies are focusing on attracting foreign students to study in Thailand rather than promoting schools to expand to other countries, Chanwit agreed with Usa and Wirach that Thailand was unable to completely block foreign educational investment flowing into the country under the AEC. International schools in Thailand, he said, would have to expand their business aggressively in neighbouring countries as well.

Wirach said Ruamrudee International School was planning to open a school in Myanmar.

"OPEC could be a reference for the international schools to guarantee their quality in any countries in which they will invest," Chanwit said.

Cell Phone Towers Pluck Birds

Click here to listen to this podcast

As you chatter on your smartphone, the death toll rises?almost 7 million birds are killed each year when they fly into communication towers that make cellphone conversations possible. Worse, the towers often kill birds that are already rare. So says a study in the journal Biological Conservation. [Travis Longcore et al, Avian mortality at communication towers in the United States and Canada: which species, how many, and where?] For example, tower impacts kill more than 2,000 yellow rails per year. That's roughly 9 percent of the total population. Ninety-seven percent of all birds killed are songbirds, especially warblers. The red-eyed vireo suffers some of the biggest losses, some 581,000 deaths annually, though that represents less than 1 percent of its population. The Southeast and Midwest lead the country in tower-bird collisions. That's because these regions have the largest concentrations of the tallest towers, up to 900 feet high. While all of the more than 80,000 communication towers in North America cause problems, the roughly 1,000 tallest towers cause 70 percent of the bird deaths, luring birds to their doom with red warning lights that are always on. A partial solution is relatively simple: replacing the always-on red lights with blinking ones could cut the deaths by as much as 70 percent. Otherwise, Twitter could have a monopoly on tweets. ?David Biello [The above text is a transcript of this podcast]? 'Tweet seats' play a role at the theater

NBC News' Willie Geist reports on the cell phone's role for "Rock Center."

By Erika Niedowski, The Associated Press

PROVIDENCE, R.I. ??Sarah Bertness slipped into her seat at a recent staging of the musical "Million Dollar Quartet" and, when the lights dimmed, started doing something that's long been taboo inside theaters: typing away at her iPhone.

The 26-year-old freelance writer from Providence wasn't being rude. She had a spot in the "tweet seat" section at the Providence Performing Arts Center.

The theater is now setting aside a small number of seats ? in the back ? for those who promise to live-tweet from the performance using a special hashtag. They might offer impressions of the set, music or costumes, lines of dialogue that resonate with them ... or anything else that strikes them, really.

At "Million Dollar Quartet," based on the true story of a 1956 recording session that united music greats Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins, PPAC for the first time had cast members tweeting from backstage, too.

Smartphone on stage
A growing number of theaters, including some on Broadway, have been experimenting in recent years with tweet seats and other real-time uses of social media as they try to figure out the relationship between the stage and the smartphone.

Some insist the theater should remain a sacred, technology-free place and that allowing the use of phones during a show ? even discreetly ? only serves as a potential distraction for other patrons. But others say theaters can't afford not to engage the digital generation, and that the way performances were once enjoyed, in a vacuum, doesn't hold up anymore.

{{/data.answerData}}

"I think that it's important that PPAC and cultural institutions in general kind of jump on the social media bandwagon and learn to engage a broader audience," said Bertness, who runs the blog The Rhode Islander and is such a big Johnny Cash fan that she showed up to the performance wearing all black. "I think it's such a valuable tool."

Scott Moreau, an understudy for Johnny Cash, hadn't ever tweeted from backstage during a performance. He tried to provide a glimpse of what life's like on the tour, which he likened to the special features on a DVD. He said he enjoyed getting instant feedback from the tweeters ? feedback he shared with other cast members.

"It makes it feel a lot more personal," Moreau said.

A picture of Moreau that was tweeted out from backstage ? he was tweeting in it himself ? prompted someone in the tweet seats to declare that's what the Man in Black would have looked like, with an iPhone.

Time for 'Twittermission'?
Other theaters are also trying different digital ways to engage with patrons. In Boston, the Huntington Theater plans to introduce a "Twittermission" where an artist affiliated with the production, or someone from the theater's staff, answers questions about the show on Twitter during intermissions. The tweets will also be projected on screens in the theater lobby, according to spokeswoman Rebecca Curtiss.

The theater won't be introducing tweet seats, though.

"We feel strongly that the experience that an audience member has in our theater should be limited to what they are seeing on the stage," Curtiss said. "When the lights go down and the show begins, we want the art on stage to speak for itself."

PPAC isn't sure yet whether any social media buzz generated by those in the tweet seats will have a measurable effect at the box office. But spokeswoman P.J. Prokop said the theater intends to keep the program through the end of the year, and then evaluate it. Those who sit in the tweet seats get their tickets for free.

Kirsten DiChiappari, who has tweeted three shows there to her nearly 1,400 followers, grew up in New Jersey going to Broadway musicals, plays and the opera. The 41-year-old social media consultant from Bristol sees her live-tweeting as a way to lure people from their living rooms, where many are glued to "horrible reality television."

"It's kind of a way to tease people back to support the live arts, the real arts, the original arts," she said. "I feel like once they go, they'll go again."

Chastened Congress takes on immigration, seeks Rubio's mojo

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A bipartisan group of leading senators has reached agreement on the principles for a sweeping overhaul of the nation's immigration laws, including a path to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants already in this country.

The deal, to be announced at a news conference Monday, also covers border security, non-citizen or "guest" workers and employer verification of immigration status.

Although thorny details remain to be negotiated and success is far from certain, the development heralds the start of what could be the most significant effort in years toward overhauling the nation's inefficient patchwork of immigration laws.

President Barack Obama also is committed to enacting comprehensive immigration legislation and will travel to Nevada on Tuesday to lay out his vision, which is expected to overlap in important ways with the Senate effort.

Passage of legislation by the full Democratic-controlled Senate is far from assured, but the tallest hurdle could come in the House, which is dominated by conservative Republicans who've shown little interest in immigration reform.

Still, with some Republicans chastened by the November elections which demonstrated the importance of Latino voters and their increasing commitment to Democrats, some in the GOP say this time will be different.

"What's changed, honestly, is that there is a new, I think, appreciation on both sides of the aisle ? including maybe more importantly on the Republican side of the aisle ? that we have to enact a comprehensive immigration reform bill," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said Sunday on ABC's "This Week."

"I think the time is right," McCain said.

Besides McCain, the senators expected to endorse the new principles Monday are Democrats Charles Schumer of New York, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Michael Bennet of Colorado; and Republicans Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marco Rubio of Florida and Jeff Flake of Arizona.

Several of these lawmakers have worked for years on the issue. McCain collaborated with the late Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy on comprehensive immigration legislation pushed by then-President George W. Bush in 2007, only to see it collapse in the Senate when it couldn't get enough GOP support.

The group claims a notable newcomer in Rubio, a potential 2016 presidential candidate whose conservative bona fides may help smooth the way for support among conservatives wary of anything that smacks of amnesty. In an opinion piece published Sunday in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Rubio wrote that the existing system amounts to "de facto amnesty," and he called for "commonsense reform."

According to documents obtained by The Associated Press, the senators will call for accomplishing four goals:

?Creating a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants already here, contingent upon securing the border and better tracking of people here on visas.

?Reforming the legal immigration system, including awarding green cards to immigrants who obtain advanced degrees in science, math, technology or engineering from an American university.

?Creating an effective employment verification system to ensure that employers do not hire illegal immigrants in the future, including requiring prospective workers to verify legal status and identity through a non-forgeable electronic system.

?Allowing more low-skill workers into the country and allowing employers to hire immigrants if they can demonstrate they couldn't recruit a U.S. citizen; and establishing an agricultural worker program.

The principles being released Monday are outlined on just over four pages, leaving plenty of details left to fill in. What the senators do call for is similar to Obama's goals and some past efforts by Democrats and Republicans, since there's wide agreement in identifying problems with the current immigration system. The most difficult disagreement is likely to arise over how to accomplish the path to citizenship.

In order to satisfy the concerns of Rubio and other Republicans, the senators are calling for the completion of steps on border security and oversight of those here on visas before taking major steps forward on the path to citizenship.

Even then, those here illegally would have to pass background checks and pay fines and taxes in order to qualify for a "probationary legal status" that would allow them to live and work here ? but not qualify for federal benefits ? before being able to apply for permanent residency, a critical step toward citizenship. Once they are allowed to apply they would do so behind everyone else already in line for a green card within the current immigration system.

That could be a highly cumbersome process, but how to make it more workable is being left to future negotiations. The senators envision a more streamlined process toward citizenship for immigrants brought here as children, and for agricultural workers.

The American Civil Liberties Union said in a statement that the framework agreed on by the senators could provide important protections for illegal immigrants who are exploited by employers and live in "constant fear" over their immigration status.

But the ACLU took issue with the proposal to require employers to use an electronic employment-verification system, calling it "a thinly disguised national ID requirement" that would undermine employees' privacy and lead to discrimination against those "who look or sound 'foreign.'"

The debate will play out at the start of Obama's second term, as he aims to spend the political capital afforded him by his re-election victory on an issue that has eluded past presidents and stymied him during his first term despite his promises to the Latino community to act.

"As the president has made clear for some time, immigration reform is an important priority and he is pleased that progress is being made with bipartisan support," a White House spokesman, Clark Stevens, said in a statement. "At the same time, he will not be satisfied until there is meaningful reform and he will continue to urge Congress to act until that is achieved."

For Republicans, the November elections were a stark schooling on the importance of Latino voters, who voted for Obama over Republican Mitt Romney 71 percent to 27 percent, helping ensure Obama's victory. That led some Republican leaders to conclude that supporting immigration reform with a path to citizenship has become a political imperative.

Indonesia readies for $1 trillion trade talks

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) ? Indonesia may hold the key to a $1 trillion injection into the global economy.

That's how much the World Trade Organization believes is riding on talks later this year in Bali, when trade ministers hope to cut through some of the red tape that slows global commerce.

Indonesia's Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa told The Associated Press that failure is not an option and that a strong effort is being put in to ensure that the WTO meeting in Bali is "crowned with success."

Trade ministers agreed Saturday at the World Economic Forum in Davos that some of the key elements of a global trade deal can be fleshed out by summer, in preparation for ministerial talks in December.

The current trade talks, known as the Doha Round, began in 2001,

Fraud concerns linger over new Ill. license law

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) ? As Illinois becomes the fourth and most populous state to issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, there are still nagging concerns that the measure doesn't have enough safeguards to avoid the identity fraud and other pitfalls faced by the three other states with similar laws.

Backers of the proposal, who tout it as a public-safety measure, argue that required facial recognition technology is reliable enough to prevent fraud, but opponents point to hundreds of fraudulent cases in New Mexico, Washington and Utah after those states began giving illegal immigrants permission to drive. Illinois will not require applicants to be fingerprinted, for fear that would discourage immigrants from applying.

"How many people would apply for this document knowing that fingerprints will be going to (federal authorities)? Probably not all that many," said Fred Tsao, policy director of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, a driving-force behind the measure.

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn is expected to sign the measure that grants driving privileges to illegal immigrants Sunday. Proponents say it will allow an estimated 250,000 individuals unlawfully residing in the state to apply for a three-year temporary driver's license and require them to get training and insurance.

The licenses will be like those already issued to certain foreign-born, legal visitors. Under the new law, applicants will be photographed at a driver services facility, and their photo will be entered into the state's facial recognition database ? like the rest of Illinois' licensed drivers? to verify their identity.

But the other states' driving programs for illegal immigrants have been abused. New Mexico and Washington both issue licenses, while Utah issues a permit.

An Associated Press investigation last year found a striking pattern in New Mexico, suggesting immigrants tried to game the system to obtain a license. In one instance, 48 foreign-born individuals claimed to live at a smoke shop in Albuquerque to fulfill a state residency condition. New Mexico does not have a fingerprinting requirement, though it asks applicants to show two proofs of state residency.

Authorities also busted a fraud ring last year that forged documents for illegal immigrants to use after driving from as far as Illinois and North Carolina to obtain a New Mexico license. Gov. Susana Martinez has vowed for years to repeal the decade-old measure, but the legislature has repeatedly rejected such efforts.

Washington's requirements attracted national attention when Jose Antonio Vargas, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and then-Washington license-holder, revealed his illegal immigration status in an essay for the New York Times Magazine in 2011. Vargas chronicled how he obtained his license. State authorities conducted an investigation that revealed Vargas did not reside at the address he stated in his application, and canceled his license a month after his essay was published.

Utah issues three different driving privilege cards: one for U.S. citizens and permanent residents, another for legal visitors and a third for illegal immigrants. Utah's permit for illegal immigrants is not valid for identification. Illinois' law will follow suit.

Utah's Republican-controlled legislature amended the state's law in 2011 to require illegal immigrants to be fingerprinted, and mandates that the state notify U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement if an applicant's fingerprint check yields a felony on record. If the individual applying has a misdemeanor warrant outstanding, the state must notify the agency that is seeking the person's arrest.

That kind of information-sharing between state and immigration authorities worries Illinois' immigrant-rights advocates, like Tsao, who pushed for the legislation without a fingerprinting requirement. They say fingerprinting could deter potential licensees from applying for fear of being identified and deported.

Local law enforcement officials argue in favor of fingerprinting.

"We could see if they have committed a crime; it could be a crime in another state or it could be a crime in their home country," said John Kennedy, executive director of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police.

The Illinois secretary of state's office has vehemently defended its facial recognition database as highly sophisticated and accurate. The program uses an algorithm to match more than a dozen facial features that are not easy to alter, such as eye sockets and sides of the mouth.

"The integrity of our driver's license system is a priority," said Henry Haupt, a spokesman for the office.

The bill's sponsor, Rep. Edward Acevedo, a Chicago Democrat, said state roads will be safer because illegal immigrants will receive training and be tested before obtaining a license. They also will be required to purchase insurance, an aspect that would save millions for currently insured drivers, Acevedo said.

Tsao's organization estimates uninsured illegal immigrant drivers cause $64 million in damage claims each year, an expense currently covered by increased premiums.

Saturday Soapbox: Buy-to-let gaming ? Opinions ? Eurogamer.net

This week has seen two big stories about premium games trying to squeeze ever-more money out of their players. They're not immediately obvious bedfellows; Square Enix's Final Fantasy: All the Bravest is a mobile title divided into cash-hungry chunks, and Dead Space 3 is as typical an AAA console title as you'll get. But both excite the same feeling of unease, and not just because they share a common theme of exploitation; it's that point where something bearable becomes too much.

This is nothing to do with the free-to-play business model, but rather the application of its mechanics. Surely everyone loves free-to-play games by now, and the many shining examples across mobile and PC show it can be the basis for top-notch titles. But there are things we acknowledge as players about free-to-play, a familiarity with its structure that means certain mechanics are accepted as inevitable: plenty of cosmetic in-app purchases, a grind-heavy levelling or crafting system, even large sections of the gameworld hived-off without payment. These things, when they are the toll booths for a great free experience, do not bother me.

The thought of paying a tax does hang loosely over my idea of free-to-play mechanics, and perhaps that's why it's so startling to see them in full price games. In terms of Final Fantasy: All the Bravest the up-front cost is ?2.49 but, like it or lump it, on the App Store that's a premium. Square Enix has previously released its games (usually ports) at a much higher price, and it's clear this original title is some kind of exploration of how they can reduce the entry point but still get the full whack by the end - it's a game they want ?30 for, in other words, so they've chopped it into paid chunks and sold you the first one for ?2.49.

1

FF: ATB has three 'extra' worlds for ?2.49 each, plus 35 FF characters at 69p each, a total of just over ?30 if you want everything (for which there is an achievement). The hourglasses are 3 for 69p, up to 20 for ?1.99.

Now, that's the prerogative of Square Enix. There's another side to FF: ATB which goes even further, however, and strikes me as wholly unethical design. A brief explanation of how the game works; it's a visual reduction of the old-style Final Fantasy 'active time battle' system with a simple touch interface. This is an automated lightshow, where you swipe your finger up and down the ranks of characters, watch them whack away, and occasionally get whacked back. The thing is, it's not all that much of a game; battles are about luck and grind. It's like playing pachinko.

Bad enough, but it's what ties into this that goes beyond reason. This ?2.49 game is dependent on a free-to-play time mechanic during game overs - if all of the party in FF: ATB die, you have the choice to restart the battle (pointless, because winning is a matter of time), wait three minutes for each individual character to resurrect (which can take hours), or use one of the hourglass IAPs to revive the party. Let me make this absolutely clear: progression in this game is impossible without either waiting for long periods or paying for hourglasses. It quite simply locks you out.

This is the most cynical and unethical creep of free-to-play mechanics into a paid-for game I've ever seen. I would absolutely love to hear what Square Enix call it. If a company like this is prepared to timelock its players out of premium games then others will follow - and if so, shouldn't that be clearly marked, as distinct from other in-app purchases? Timelocks like this surely have to be addressed by vendors. I cannot fathom why any publisher would think conning people like this is a good idea, yet here we are.

Still, at least players on mobile are much more used to the way these tactics work, and wising up to the cash grabs. The intrusion of microtransactions feels more natural in this space, and many games handle them with considerably more nuance than Square Enix's offering. When you're paying ?40 for a game like Dead Space 3, however, where do you draw the line?

2

?Hey Carver, where'd ya get that sweet red helmet?? ?Picked it up at one of those new vending machines greenhorn, some other sucker takes the tab and I get the sugar.?

Let's get a few things out of the way: post-launch DLC is fine, cosmetic stuff like costumes is fine, and lots of AAA games offer great value for extra money. The issue with Dead Space 3 is nothing to do with downloadable extras, but the intrusion of a free-to-play mechanic into its high-priced world; you can pay to get extra resources for its weapon-crafting system.

That is not a small part of the experience. I may have a soft spot for Resi, but Dead Space is the current king of survival horror games. The way your kit expands and improves has always been a key ingredient in the best of this genre, and those sparse power nodes always felt like real treasure. It's a system that's absolutely fine as it is, and it will inevitably be changed for the worse by the intrusion of in-game purchases.

I'm sure EA and Visceral Games will say different, but there's no way the presence of microtransactions can avoid influencing its design. If no-one will pay, then why spend time putting it in? If people are going to pay, then how do you manipulate the circumstances to make them? On a project of this magnitude, a feature cannot exist in a vacuum - it warps everything around it to fit. Does that corridor really need to be this long? Why is that rare crafting item hidden in such an out-of-the-way place? Every time you see the little shop prompt, you'll know.

3

An amazing feature of FF: ATB is that you constantly earn Gil, the FF currency, throughout - yet there isn't a single thing in the game to spend it on. It's like Square are actually mocking the player at times.

This is a difficult subject, because on the one hand publishers will argue players get plenty of hours of entertainment for their money, and in many cases they'd be right. On the other, a game that launches in the standard ?40-?50 range is asking for what is quite simply an awful lot of money. Consumers paying that deserve a complete product in return; not one where a central mechanic has been artificially adjusted to squeeze more out. Can you imagine buying Dead Space 3, sitting down to play it in a darkened room, then feeling pressured to go and dig out your bank card?

Amid all the coverage of these events, the pun of the week went to RockPaperShotgun's twitter feed with 'The Grinding of Isaac?' That captures everything about how it feels; the biblical wrongness of grinding, however gently, being introduced into a premium game to eke a little bit more out of your wallet. As many wags this week have pointed out, EA is trying to charge you ?40 for an experience, and then charge you more to skip parts of it - a bittersweet joke because, of course, it's true.

It is a great pity that angry gamers are so good at getting het up about pointless things, like Dante's new hairstyle, rather than these game-ruining microtransactions - a bit of real consumer advocacy wouldn't go amiss. Don't we have the right to know if a premium game is built on core systems with a paid-for element? Shouldn't that be marked on its advertising and flagged in its product description? What about specific tools like timelocks? Developers are clearly going to use them, so what's the appropriate response?

The truth is that, for Square Enix and EA, the gamble is quite independent of the specialist press - its success or failure will be determined by the numbers, not any reputational damage on the way. Hoping that these companies make monetisation decisions in an ethical or even a design-led context has ended up here. The market will decide where we go, of course, and one can only hope it spits these experiments back in disgust. Failing that, welcome to the future; where buying a game is an ongoing process.

NATO missile defense battery in Turkey operational

BRUSSELS (AP) ? The first of six Patriot missile batteries being deployed to Turkey to protect against attack from Syria was declared operational Saturday and placed under Turkish command, NATO said.

The battery, provided by the Netherlands, is meant to protect the city of Adana by shooting down missiles that could come over the Syrian border. Turkey has become a harsh critic of the regime in Syria, where a vicious civil war has left at least 60,000 people dead.

The United States, Germany and the Netherlands are providing two batteries each of the latest version of the U.S.-made Patriots. The other five Patriot batteries are expected to be in place and operational in the coming days in Adana, Kahramanmaras and Gaziantep.

"This is a clear demonstration of the agility and flexibility of NATO forces and of our willingness to defend Allies who face threats in an unstable world," Admiral James Stavridis, NATO's Supreme Allied Commander for Europe, said in a statement.

NATO reiterated Saturday that the Patriots are for defensive purposes only. Syria has not fired any of its surface-to-surface missiles at Turkey during its nearly two-year civil war and its government has described the NATO deployment as a provocation.

NATO also deployed Patriot batteries to Turkey during the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq 10 years ago. They were never used and were withdrawn a few months later.

Archos offers Bluetooth Keyboard for iPad, apparently holds no grudges

Archos

Archos must be in a benevolent mood: it first posted a version of its Video Player app for competing Android devices, and now it's selling the keyboard technology of its Gen10 XS tablets to those using an entirely different platform. Its Bluetooth Keyboard for iPad offers a familiar 0.2-inch thick, Smart Cover-like peripheral for full-size Apple tablets from the iPad 2 through to the latest generation. The design naturally switches over to iOS-native keyboard shortcuts, and there's even an iPad-only advantage in the adjustable kickstand. Americans can buy the keyboard in March for $79; believing that Archos would downplay its core business will remain optional.

Apple TV would signal future innovation

In any other context, the idea of punishing a company that delivered an 18 percent year-over-year increase, bringing quarterly revenue to $54.5 billion, would be absurd, but Apple, in a way, is a victim of its own success.

The Changing Nature of the Threat ? 2013 ? Speaking of Security ...

By Azeem Aleem, Practice Lead ? RSA Advance Cyber Defense (EMEA)

Technology advancements are primarily meant to improve upon the quality of life. Unfortunately, it is also used as a tool for illegal activities. During the past 15 years organizations have undergone significant developments. The very nature of organizations has changed substantially as a result of rapid technological advancement, with a remarkable advancement in enterprise technology, which has created new opportunities for different business practices .These developments, coupled with the new dynamic concept of managing the global enterprise, and remarkable advancements in enterprise technology has created many new challenges to previously successful business practices.

I will be updating this blog with discussions and insight on threats affecting businesses. I will highlight cyber crime related activities and discuss remediation and preventive frameworks to prevent the escalation of a cyber crisis.

Cloud: The Definition and the Discipline?

In this post, I?d like to say a few things about Cloud Computing ? The advent of cloud computing is a direct result of such technological transformations. In the corporate sector, particularly the financial market, it is next to impossible for businesses not to come across the concept of cloud computing ??Implement Cloud to survive? has been the call you get these days from the media and industry experts.

There is no denying the benefits, but very few studies to date have examined cloud platforms with a balanced approach, i.e. benefits vs. security risk.

The concept of the cloud is not new, attempts to reduce organisations reliance on IT hardware started with the concept of networking in 1990s to Grid computing systems in 200s. Many term the development of cloud as convergence of networking and Grid computing with the increasing trend towards external outsourcing of IT resources. This convergence has not been sudden rather the development (online music file sharing, online documents, remote access etc) showed a slow migration towards the concept of cloud. Today, the pervasiveness of the Internet bundled with affordable high bandwidth has caused a move back to the original centralised computing model, mainly due to the popularity of cloud computing .

In part 2 of this blog series, I?ll address risk and security challenges associated with migrating data and applications to the cloud and how the RSA Advanced Cyber Defense Services team advises clients on how to develop and implement a holistic Cyber Cloud Strategy.
