Yes, this column is meant to make you feel good.

If you are like most people, you spend a great deal of time feeling stressed and worried. You have earned a moment of joy. In fact, you have earned a day of adventure, a day of surprise.

The first surprise is that you're reading this in the newspaper. All of those times when you have thought: "I wish I could find something in the news that did not make me feel afraid, worried or depressed." Well, today is not one of those days where there is nothing positive in the news.

This is my honest attempt to remind you that life is a privilege. It's what I've seen in many of the people I've interviewed. Jacqui Jarret?came to terms with losing part of her arm in a car accident when she volunteered in Haiti, following its devastating earthquake in 2010. The Bethlehem nutritionist met others who had lost more than one limb, and several family members. They were in the most precarious of circumstances and yet they were grateful for life. Jarret later told me that she had gone to Haiti to help the people, but instead they had helped her to heal.

Ron Moyer, whose son died in a car accident at the age of 20, recently called me to share what he felt when he met the families of those who had received his son's life-saving organs. He and his wife Jenny will always miss their son, but they found joy in giving life to others.

Even in the most limited and predictable of circumstances, there is room for surprise. Easton Physical Therapist Steve Super lost his vision at the peak of his accounting career due to congenital optical disease. He had to rebuild is life. He did, earning his degree in Physical Therapy and starting a family.

Eight years later, Super regained his vision--just before the birth of his first son. It defied all the statistics and probabilities for someone with his condition.

These are some of the countless?Lehigh Valley neighbors who have faced enough adversity to see life as a gift.
