A new hub airport to the east of London would create ?hundreds of thousands? of new jobs, according to London mayor Boris Johnson.
Johnson has today (July 15) launched his preferred three options for airport expansion in the south-east, which are new hub airports on either the Isle of Grain or an artificial island in the outer Thames estuary (dubbed Boris Island), or an extended Stansted.
The mayor said these options are ?all superior to Heathrow?. Johnson is a vehement opponent of any further expansion at the UK?s current hub airport.
?A four-runway, 24-hour hub to east of London is the only way to remain globally competitive - Heathrow is environmentally impossible,? said Johnson.
?A hub to the east will quadruple access to emerging markets, worth ?742 billion to UK by 2050, creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs.?
Johnson has named the Isle of Grain site, which has been proposed by leading architect Sir Norman Foster, as his first choice option, followed by an expanded by Stansted and then Boris Island.
"Ambitious cities all over the world are already stealing a march on us and putting themselves in a position to eat London?s breakfast, lunch and dinner by constructing mega airports that plug them directly into the global supply chains that we need to be part of," added Johnson.
"Those cities have moved heaven and earth to locate their airports away from their major centres of population, in areas where they have been able to build airports with four runways or more.
"For London and the wider UK to remain competitive we have to build an airport capable of emulating that scale of growth. Anyone who believes there would be the space to do that at Heathrow, which already blights the lives of hundreds of thousands of Londoners, is quite simply crackers.?

Johnson set out his case for a four-runway airport for the south-east earlier this month and will now submit detailed proposals for the three sites he has identified to the Airports Commission.
Airports and other groups are due to present their submissions to the commission, chaired by Sir Howard Davies, by the end of this week.
